P.S. im pretty sure REAL PIRATES would be all about beating up chicks, as opposed to playing benefit shows against domestic violence.

P.P.S. for an australian your singer sure sounds alot like the guy in the spongebob squarepants themesong, just sayin'

pirate metal is fucking gay. the majority of the posers playing it can't even wake up on time to go fishing, let alone have the stomach for a day on the salt water.

if you're going to the nov 3rd show with Vreid, Belphegor and the like, be prepared to see mass amounts of kids rocking out to Alestorm - that newer Scottish Folk/Pirate metal band.
When Swashbuckle played last year, THAT WAS A JOKE

all set with that show. folk metal is for kids who are frightened by black metal. some is decent but overall when i hear it, i'd rather just listen to nokturnal mortem.

it's like pizza party thrash is for kids who are intimidated by sodom and nifelheim while folk metal is for kids who are intimidated by burzum and profanatica.

I'm not big on the direction folk metal is going. This pirate metal shit is a joke too.
The best folk bands were always the ones that used it sparingly, or at least pull it off correctly. Too many jig-type drinking bands these days. Growing trend.

Again, I know most people disagree with me, but this is the reason why I can't stand any Ensiferum after the self-titled. It's too flashy and corny. Not knocking Jari's musicianship on Iron and Wintersun, but his style is so cheesy.
Even Ensiferum's S/T has its cheesy moments, but some of the folkier parts are great.

For folk-type stuff, I find myself listening to Neun Welten all the time. Although not exactly metal, they're metal musicians and you can hear the influence behind their folk music. Awesome German band.

I'm waiting for American Folk Metal - blastbeats and black metal screams, then banjo and fiddle duels.
Before someone says Devin in the Kitchen, yea - no shit. But no banjo = fail.

But pizza thrash sounds kind of like Sodom and Nifelheim, while folk metal doesn't sound anything like Burzum or Profanatica? I feel like this zinger should've read "Southern Lord" instead of "folk metal."

Anyhow, I think the IDEA of "pirate metal" is cool because there are a ton of old-ass nautical songs bands could draw on the way some Scandinavian bands drew on their old folk songs. Not real big on the cartoonish way it always seems to turn out though.

If you're thinking of hectic bluegrass banjo, that's not really a folk style of playing - it was more or less invented (based on earlier styles) in the 40s. Real folk banjo (clawhammer, 2- and 3- finger picking) is a lot less bombastic. I actually think about what "North American folk metal" would sound like a lot (I spend more time playing banjo/mandolin than heavy metal now that I live in Western Mass.) and it's tough because so many of the actual melodies are just so chipper and major key sounding compared to Irish and especially Norwegian folk music. And the stuff that sounds dark tends to be more drone-y and modal - a lot of North American folk music didn't even have chords until it started to become commercialized in the 20s-30s.

I mean, I'm sure someone will figure it out and it'll sound interesting, but it seems like a much trickier fit than Euro folk music.

PS like on that Forteresse record, the fiddle samples sound kind of cool but still totally disconnected from the actual songs.

too me I hear more DRI, and cheap rehashed riffs spurred by grim reaper and whiplash-these riffs aren't played with conviction either just nostalgic hype heard from ripped mp3 files.

you can't tell me that the average folk metal listener appreciates the early black metal style. raw production and praise of satan is something that intimidates many of the younger fans-folk metal is the safe alternative.

I'm just saying that the two things sound totally different, and I don't think it makes sense to claim that one is a watered-down version of the other. Although they talked about Norse culture etc. a lot, early black metal bands took very little actual musical influence directly from folk music, and definitely way less than folk-metal bands do. It's like comparing apples and oranges.

Yeah, listening to some stuff from the 20s (or later revivalists) it's not always obvious what key or time they're playing in, let alone how you'd adapt it to a 5-piece metal band.

I'm still baffled that no one mentioned how funny that picture is in the first post.
Dude on the left looks like a complete tool, and the dude sitting down looks way out of place.
I know some bands aren't meant to be taken seriously, but come on..

The joke was this: You were stating that they didn't use chords until a certain time. I thought this was a silly thing to say, as chords are literally more than one note played at the same time, and people have been doing that since it was possible. SO... my joke was that people didn't start using triplets and accents till years after that.... which was an equally silly comment, as people have been playing music with triplets and accents since the beginnings of music.

But...I wasn't talking about "people," I said that North American folk music didn't generally use chords until it started to be influenced by commercial music. I mean, obviously there were different traditions so maybe that was too broad a generalization, is that what you meant?

Anyhow, there were many regions of North America where folk music used to be most often performed by a single melody instrument or voice, or maybe two melody instruments playing in unison. There are still commonly played tunes that don't fit into chords (without making them sound like jazz), which used to drive me nuts when I played bass at old-time jam sessions.

I can't tell if you're trying to discuss this or just busting my balls though.
