No, 221 is not the important number. The important number is 42 minutes. That's how long the Steelers had the ball for. THAT is where Corey Dillon comes in. As for players being out, I'm sorry, but none of the injured Steelers players impacted the game the way Corey Dillon does. You can point at Deuce Staley all you want, Jerome Bettis is better and is the exact same player. Kevin Faulk vs. the Pittsburgh D is a HORRIBLE matchup. 221 happens because of 42. The Patriots ran the ball SIX times in the ENTIRE game. Corey Dillon prevents 42, which prevents 221. Our best defense in that game was Corey Dillon. Not only did Corey not play, but Matt Light got hurt on the first drive, and Tom Ashworth was already out. You can't tell me that having two new o-lineman in the game didn't contribute to all of the Steelers sacks and the fumble and also contribute to Brady rushing his throws. All I am saying is that if you give me Corey Dillon, Matt Light, Deion Branch and two corners that have come into their own since October 31st, I like my chances... A LOT. Ty Law and Ty Poole aren't options, so their names shouldn't even be brought up in the conversation. Besides that, the Steelers didn't do themselves any favors talking the amount of shit they talked that day. There are a lot of bitter men in that Patriots locker room, and one of them is named Bill Belechick. Any time I've got Bill on my side and he's pissed, I REALLY like my chances... |

Honestly, Corey can more than make up for that folly. I know you seen how he played the colts defense. Pats are NFL champs looking for revenge! We got Vineteri to put the first score on the board and possibly the last - he's always on point. Just when you think Corey's done, he's got the moves to get at least another 5 yards. And about Miami, that was a joke. Anybody who uses that game as an arguement don't even understand that the Pats didn't need to win that shit. Miami didn't beat the Pats - the Pats willfully lost. It's a cheap shot and it really don't have any bearing on this game against the steelers. Let's face it - the Pats ain't losin twice. Fuck the PO-lice!!! |

________________________________ [Jan 21,2005 8:19am - JayTUS ""] Nel is right, Steelers fans (and players for that matter) act so cocky about that October 31st game, when in reality, just look at these five very important numbers: Steelers time of posession: 42 minutes Patriots time of posession: 18 minutes Patriots turnovers in the first quarter: 3 Points caused by turnovers in first quarter: 21 Final score: 34-20 Erase that first quarter, the Pats win the game. I've already said it, but Corey Dillon keeps the Steelers offense off the field. I'm not going to sit here and say he's going to average 4.5 yards a carry against an outstanding Steelers defense, but if he has 28-33 carries, then the Patriots probably win. That simple. All they need to do to win is get into the Red zone. The Pats have the second most profiecent Red zone offense in the NFL. The Steelers have the best defense (statistically) in the NFL, but their Red zone defense is ranked ninth. So basically what that says is that all the scoring on the Steelers is done in the red zone. They don't give up big plays. That's good, because the Patriots aren't a "big play" team, a la the St. Louis "high flying" Rams and Indianapolis Colts. The anticipation for this game is so high, haha. I'm so sick of disecting it and analyzing it over and over again, I just want the damn thing to start!! |
_____________________________________ [Jan 21,2005 8:24am - Robdeadskin ""] numbers and stats dont mean shit.....steelers havent been cocky this year...pats fans have been far worse...look at all of you!!! fuck the stats fuck all the sports talk..crack a beer a watch what happens. We have beaten every team and at least we are not depending on one guy to win a fuckin ball game. |
________________________________ [Jan 21,2005 8:35am - JayTUS ""] Actually, you are. You're dependant on Ben Roethlisberger. If he has the game he had last week against a good team, you lose. If he has the game he had against the Jets the last time they played them, and the game he had against the Giants, you lose. Unfortunately, the Jets are a fraud team and the Giants suck. All three of those games SHOULD have been losses. But unlike the Patriots in Miami, the Steelers sucked it up and got the job done at the end. Besides that, the Steelers depend on Bettis/Staley. If they don't run well, the Steelers lose. Ben Roethlisberger has never been put in a position where the game depended on him. Do you really want to see that happen for the first time against the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship game? And yes, the Steelers have talked a TON of shit. That is their nature. That is how they do things. Always has been and always will be. Stats mean a TON. That is how teams approach a game. All five of those stats have EXTREMELY high amounts of signifigance. Erase the three turnovers in the first quarter, time of posession shifts and 21 points come off the board, and the Patriots probably win. In that game, for once, they weren't prepared for life without Corey Dillon. Then Matt Light went down. Sorry, when you've got two backups in at the tackle position, I don't care who you're playing, shits not going to be easy, let alone against a Steelers defense that, big stat here, ranked first in the NFL. Joey Porter had a field day, more stats: three sacks and a forced fumble. Matt Light will be there Sunday, and fully healed. That's going to make a small difference. We'll see how it all plays out, but with Corey Dillon this time around, I really, REALLY like my chances. |

_____________________________________ [Jan 21,2005 8:59am - Converge241 ""] the time of possession is also a record for this year i believe ..good stuff belichick is great and easily the best coach in the NFL right now ..it's just too bad he's not good enough to overcome injuries..lord knows thats not a part of football at all *snicker* hopefully no one gets hurt for either team..if a steeler player got hurt and they lost I wouldnt be whining about it..of course have seen tons of evidence that it wont be the same case if, heaven forbid, a pats player goes down..like when brady went down in the 2001 game and bledsoe played "hero" but this is some good trash talk.arguing..debating this is the game I look forward to more than anythign when it happens and really the only time i turn heel on the patriots cause its always steelers 1st in my book since i was a "wee little tyke"..hopefully i can pad my wallet like i did in october with all the laughing pats fans who chalked that game up as a win as well |

That's what we had on October 31st. Besides that, and I've already said this, the two Super Bowl years, the Patriots ran an offense around the short passing game. This year, they run it around Corey Dillon. THAT is the difference. Now on to how Corey has done against the Steelers. From what I remember, Corey averages 3.8 yards a carry vs. the Steelers over his career. Yes, that was in Cincinatti, so put that on a good Patriots team, and I like my chances. If he can do it with them, I am sure he can do just as much, if not more with us. I will do cartwheels if Corey averages 3.8 yards a carry and gives us 30 carries on Sunday. Do the math. No, Ben Roethlisberger has not had to go out and win a game by himself. He's had Bettis and/or Staley right there with him time and time again. That makes all the difference in the world. If you want a cookie because he can put together a late drive against the NEW YORK GIANTS and bring them back, then I'll give you a whole bag. He's a rookie, and he sure as hell looked like one against the Jets, and he hasn't exactly been playing his best football the last six weeks. That's a fact, and Pittsburgh journalists and players will be the first to say it. Peyton Manning looked like a high schooler against the Pats. Now I know it's two different teams and that Peyton Manning usually looks like a high schooler against the Pats, but if the Pats D isn't scaring you right now, you've got some brass balls... No, I don't think the Steelers deserve a lot of credit for the October 31st game. They won a game that realistically, they should have won. Wow, you're badasses, you won a football game. But to sit there and act like the World Champs, a team that has lost FOUR games in the last two years is some walkover because you beat them while they were down is a little retarded if you ask me. Sorry, Steelers fans are giving them WAY TOO MUCH credit for that game, and Pats fans probably aren't giving them enough. I can promise you this: if the Pats lose on Sunday, there will be no excuses. The Steelers will be the better team. All I've said all along is you give me every player the Pats have that isn't on the IR, they will beat ANYONE in the NFL. If Richard Seymour doesn't play, I still won't make excuses, because as good as he is, Jarvis Green does a solid job and all Richard does is plug holes and try to get to the QB. We are deep on the DL, and if we can lose any Pro Bowler, it's him. That said, I reaaaaaaaallllllly can't wait for Sunday. :NEWHORNS: |
_____________________________________ [Jan 21,2005 9:52am - Converge241 ""] i dont think patriots are a walkover at all..of course im being a wahoo and overdoing it on my pick but it is one i believe in strongly if the oct 31st game wasnt on the schedule or whatever i would say the same thing i.e that the steelers would win after all i had no precedent when i said steelers would win that game when making bets/talking with friends and co-workers before the game (and BEFORE dillon was declared out and BEFORE Ty and Light got hurt) just said steelers would run the ball and the blitz would get to brady and i thought it was "due" for the streak to end..of course they all thought "not possible" , and im not just a blind faith guy cause i did pick eagles to win the next week in the pick em league and what not i will agree to disagree but i think you know your football (even if the feeling aint mutual haha) i just think the running game and the blitzes will win the game again regardless of who is hurt and who isnt if the pats want to beat the steelers they should defensively play the same game and confuse roeth with lots of different looks and different people blitzing and keep playing the zone. offensively the short passes should bring some succes for them (the pats) and they should keep trying the 5 wr formation because steelers do not have guys that can cover..if brady can get just a few quick passes off before the blitz hits on those 5 wides that should reap some rewards i dont think dillon will be a big factor..call me an idiot all you want but he will not have a big day..im sure he will get tough yards and key plays here and there as far as the steelers side on keys to winning..i think cowher and roethlisberger get too much credit this year for the success (think the main cred should go to lebeau and russ grimm and the respective players executing for them of course) but those 2 learned things from the looks the patriots gave them before..they are going to pound the ball relentlessley the patriots have gotten better against the run after a scary start but they still have problems pitt has 4 guys who can run the ball and will get them all in the mix..Ben will improve from last week and make better decisions..in no way will he come out and win this game but he will be a usefull factor and randle el and tuman are underrated guys who will step up and make some key grabs as far as non-stats stuff im a big believer in jinxes, mojo, streaks, luck etc etc i know its stupid but i dont care and im scared of a few things the symmetry of the steelers ending a long pats streak and now the steelers are on that long streak (reminds me of the 31-0 buffalo symmetry last year) brady never losing a playoff game steelers "recent" history in AFC title games patriots history against bettis in playoffs a rookie qb never playign in the superbowl so there is a lot of stuff on pats side IMO and the winner is going to have to earn every moment of this win in the end though i think it will be the steelers who make the pats "put their teeth on the curb" and then stomp will be a close game though official prediction steelers 20-16 |
_________________________________ [Jan 21,2005 10:06am - JayTUS ""] and the winner is going to have to earn every moment of this win Absolutely. As for the Pats keys to stopping the Steelers, I think it's pretty easy, they need to plug the gaps, which they didn't do October 31st AT ALL. If they make Bettis or Staley rush outside the tackles, the entire Steelers offense becomes one dimentional, because those two make their money running inside. That's what the Pats did in 2001 and that's what I think they will do again. In terms of the secondary, everyone talks about how they are banged up, and trust me, I would much rather have Ty Law/Poole in the game playing every down, but Eugene Wilson and Rodney Harrison are still the best safety combo in the league (debatable, but top two or three at the least) and I LOVE what I have seen from Asante Samuel and Randall Gay recently. They'll probably play a lot of zone and just try to prevent the big play. The reason I think Dillon plays a big factor in this game is because he's a change of pace, he keeps the defense honest, and most importantly, he's the best blocking RB in the game. The Pats are going to use Dan Graham as a sixth O-Lineman A LOT. I don't think Dillon is going to rush for much more then 80 yards. I put him somewhere between the 70-80 mark with at least 25 touches. But those 25 touches slows the pace of the game down, brings those 42 minutes of posession that the Steelers had last time down and basically prevents them from scoring. The only way the Steelers win is if they score on defense or are able to establish the rush the way they did October 31st. I just don't trust Ben Roethlisberger to go out and win a game for them against the Pats. Maybe this is the game he earns that tag, who knows, but until I see it, I don't believe it can happen (much like my stance on the Colts beating the Pats in Foxboro). The Steelers and Cowher have done an excellent job of putting Roethlisberger in a position to not have to do too much this year, and that will pay off three years down the road for sure. He's going to be a STUD QB for a long time, no doubt. That said, I would pay money to knock that mongloid jaw off Bill Cowher's face. That dude totally plays everything up for TV... GO PATS!! |
