I'm fucking nervous. Cisco is some crazy shit, not just the wine either. Any you Negroes have your CCNA cert?

You doing it all in one go or the two tests with ICND1/2?

I got it 3 years ago with the one 640-801 exam right before they switched to 640-802, but I heard it's pretty similar.

I just used one Cisco Press book with the questions at the end of each chapter and that was basically it. You should read whatever book you get cover to cover at least couple times taking notes. The second time reading it, see which quiz questions you cannot answer and re-read those sections. Luckily I was pretty familiar with IOS (I forgot everything now), but if you're not I would get your hands on either some routers or an emulators.. I think there was like a 7200 simulator program that was really good once you figured out how to use it.

It's mostly multiple choice with some stupid matching questions like matching up the administrative distances with each routing protocol. Then one mock lab questions, where mine was configuring a simple ACL to allow some ports to some obscure subnets. Only the basic commands that are in the book are allowed, so you it won't let you get too fancy. You can't go back, but if you're wasting too much time on one questions and it's not worth a lot, skip it. There were plenty of people I knew that just out right skipped the mock lab question and passed with the old test.

Know your subnetting very very well. Very Well. You should be able to calculate everything on this http://www.subnet-calculator.com/ pretty easily for any random IP address/network.

They give you a small whiteboard you can use during the exam. I used it to write down my powers of 2's before I even started the exam, but write down whatever you use to memorize your subnetting. A lot of the questions force you to figure out the IP's in each network they have listed on the question even though the question has nothing to do with subnetting.

Good luck.

I have a PIX firewall, a Catalyst 3500 switch and a 2600 Router that my boss is letting me use to fuck around with. I don't have a book yet, I'm using actualtests to get the question formatting in my head. I definitely will be boning up on subnetting.

Haha - Brad, our new guitar guy is a copier guy. Was passing on training stories last night (they wanted me to learn basic dry-function black and whites, so of course they send me out with Chris, who fixes color machines and liquid duplicators, super fucking helpful). - Tales from the Brool Story Co.

Good luck with the CCNA. I remember reading though a whole CCNA study guide for a course in school. Fun stuff. I can't wait to finally get some of these certs now that I have a job that's not only willing to pay for it, but willing to let me take time to study. Once I finish my MCITP:EA I will look into either CCNA, VCP, or a Linux+ or something.

nice! I still work on printers, the place I work at is an HP dealer, computer or copier warranty claims and support, as well as small to medium network support. I love the place, everyone is pretty cool and easy going. I'm excited to get off the bench work and get out of the office for network/server issues. Virus removal is so boring. Plus if we meet billable goals we get bonuses, which is impossible to attain working on the bench.

Right now I'm cramming on the OSI model and Subnetting. shits the shits

btw: I work mostly 2-5

Also, if you think subnetting is hard (I assume you are just talking ipv4), try ipv6 on for size. It's 128bits. Subnetting there is a bitch when you are converting back and forth between ipv4 and ipv6.

The other week, I had to work out an algorithm to allow for mask incrementing of a subnetting mac address. That was terrible.
example:
00:33:44:55:66:77
FF:FF:FF:FF:00:FF
xx:00:xx:00:xx:xx

increment that + 1 and it's 00:33:44:55:66:78
increment it 255-0x77 and it's 00:33:44:56:66:00.

Sorry to dig this up almost 2 weeks after it died, but Aaron just linked me to this because I was asking about networking certs. I'm actually studying for my CCNA right now (640-802), but doing it myself. I am not in the industry yet, so I don't have a company behind me willing to pay the $3.5k for the 5-day training course, and I definitely can't afford it myself.

I found a really helpful comprehensive and FREE study guide for the certification if anyone's interested: http://www.ccnacertificationguide.com/

There are a lot of ads, but at least the site is free to use and it has a LOT of information. Covers everything and anything you have to know for the 640-802.

Day one-OSI model, subnetting explained in a way that I understood(FINALLY), and basic Cisco config commands

Went to eat BBQ with the teacher and some classmates, ended up in the hotel conference room where the class is held to drink beers, the teacher got an email from a friend at a testing center that had screenshots of the test from last week. WOOT!!

Going for the CCNA Security boot camp next month.

Then I'm upgrading my MCITP:SA to Server 2012. I've already installed a few 2012 servers, one with Exchange 2013, which is MAD different. No more Exchange Management Concole, it uses the web based Exchange Control Panel. It also uses Outlook anywhere to connect all Outlook clients, local or remote.

That's why Computers need CNA's.

This place I'm working at is great. SO far they have paid for and I have gotten

CCNA
CCNA Voice
MCSA Server 2012
HP AIS
Comptia A+ and Net+
VMWare VCP 5

With a bonus and raise after each. So glad I don't fix printers anymore

I'm only going to guess, but I think 2-years from now, Juniper will be #4. Still when cisco controls over 80% of the enterprise networking... what are you going to do?
