I think there's good points on both sides of the aisle. There's no question that metal is full of shallow-minded socialites who latch onto current trends for non-musical reasons. There's no denying that. As musicians, we would want the kind of fan that enjoys the music and art we create. Real fans are ones who connect with the music and understand what the artist is portraying. On the otherhand, I also believe the subcultural values of metal should be preserved, before we lose grasp of what metal represents. Subcultural values you say? Indeed. "Hipsters" are those who have no real subculture to latch on, and are nomadic in the sense of moving around music scenes. With metal, I feel, this is different. Metal today is bot what it was in the past. You will always have your traditionalist fans, and your liberal fanbase. Metal has changed, its fanbase has changed. We live in a world where art is constantly evolving, whether it be by rehashing old sounds to make them new again while blending your own style into it(OFFICIALLY GHOST), or by cross-genre mixing. Crossover is to shoegaze blackmetal as technical deathmetal is to prog metal. Everythings been done now, and the majority of the fanbase has no real identity because of metal being so widespread bs available now. Listen to what you want to listen to, don't do it for social reasons, and try to delve into the classics. Appreciate the art for what it was, what it still is, and what it will be. Filter out the bad bands. Filter out the false fans. Death to hipsters, restore metal. Move backwards to move forward. Tl;dr
