or just a general distortion pedal that will work with bass...possibly a gritty overdrive pedal that doesn't suck? I am willing to pay real cold hard cash for one.

fulltone ocd, black russian big muff, pro co rat (not the new ones... the one with the LM308 chip), boss odb-3, devi ever the wolf....

I highly recommend any one of those. The Wolf is a fucking monster.

the beckwiths said "as much distortion as possible"

does that help?

we had a death metal pedal that got stolen and the super distortion pedal is sketchy and screeches like a parrot.

Catalinbread SFT. Thing kills it, and the price is pretty reasonable. OR I'd be glad to build you something custom.

I always recommend the MXR Bass DI+. I'm not sure how easy they are to come by these days, or if MXR is still making them, but they're excellent, as the sound guy can obviously run his DI right to the board from it, and you'll have a nice distorted signal. It also works well for recording quickly. My 2 cents...

I've never been a huge fan of the Boss, but I know a ton of folks that get sounds they like out of it. It's a little too industrial sounding for me, but for $50, you could always flip it for the same price if you don't dig it. Most of my boxes are in the $80 to $150 range, depending on the finish, circuit complexity, and parts sourcing. It usually takes a little over 2 weeks as long as the parts are easy to find.

could you make one that sounds like the Boss HM-2? A pedal with high crunchy distortion...

I've been working on a prototype for exactly that for a while now. Problem is, I keep getting orders for other shit, and I haven't has the time to get the damn thing assembled. But, yes. We can do that, and my version is actually usable for more than just the chainsaw sound. I'm gonna be trying to get it done this weekend. I'd be pumped to have folks fuck around with it, but I can't sell the prototype yet.

awesome..sounds promising. i might buy one in the meantime but i am still interested in hearing this pedal you are making and possibly purchasing it.

As soon as the prototype is done, I'll let folks know on here. I need as much feedback (pun) as possible, I'm thinking about making them on a small scale production. I could also do a Muff variant if you're interested, and that'd be right quick to slap together.

I had one of these short a short time. The overdrive isn't great, but it's serviceable none the less. For $50 you can't really go wrong considering they're about $100 or so new.

I kinda like the DOD Grunge pedal for bass

DOD Metal Maniac was the best pedal I ever used for bass, pretty sure they stopped making it a long time ago though.

Even the DOD American Metal is pretty cool on bass. It's literally the same circuit as the HM-2, but the lows are turned all the way up, all of the time. I think you can still snag 'em on Ebay for pretty cheap. Like under $30 cheap.

If you're talking for Hirudinea, I think the ODB-3 or even a Metal Zone on bass would work well.

If you need it fixed, I take a look at it. I doubt it's a catastrophic failure.

think im actually just gonna order that supra distortion pedal...i was spelling it "super" on ebay so it wasn't showing up...they are on there for around $30 so i think this will be a good temporary pedal until bradsauce completes his pedal.

[Apr 26,2011 12:14pm - Randy_Marsh ""]
yeah it has basic connectivity problems and squeals like a pig. if you can fix that we should be good to go, depending on how much it will cost to fix.

I'll bet I can do it for less then $30. Where are ya located?

fuck no, blue...they used to make everyone use the metalzone for bass in Hiru and it sounded like shit...no balls - just static

brad, brighton-allston area..

we used the death metal distortion pedal for awhile until it went missing and that pedal sounded pretty good and probably somewhat equivalent to the metal zone but I would say the supra distortion pedal has way more balls.

Sweet dude, I'm in Cleveland circle. I've got Thursday or Friday evening open this week, if either of those work. Otherwise, I'll be around all weekend. Shoot me an email and we can work out the details.

AMOROK - I'd love to build something for ya. Let me know if I can help.

The thing about the Boss, is that it has to be heard in context.

Just playing the bass thru it by yourself at high volume... it's not going to blow you away, and may sound harsh, or whatever.... But in the context of the band, and the way it can blend with the guitar... it can be pretty great. It gives a presence to the bass that allows you to get it at a volume where the lowend isn't overwhelming the rest of the band, and you can still hear the upper harmonic structure of what your playing.

I owe that to the "balance" control. Being able to dial in a bit of the clean tone is a function most bass distortions would benefit from, IMO.

I'd say getting Bradsauce to build you an OCD-type thing with a bit more lowend than the Fulltone version would rule too.

I actually just built a box like that for the bass player from Ramming Speed. It's based on a Tube Screamer (modded for more low end and different clipping structure), but with a pretty ballsy clean blend. The clean control is definitely hip for bass; at one extreme of the knob you get the overdrive, at the other you've got a huge clean boost.
