Jeeze, if we didn't bring cabs... we could go with a car less too. But I ask you, is that fair? (i only bring up this hypothetical problem for discussion sake, not because i want someone to feel bad, or to pick a fight. The subject came up, it reminded me of a pet peeve i've had with people not realizing how inconsiderate it is to show up at a show with no cabs and to assume that someone else will let them use theirs, and that it's not a big deal because they had to bring them anyways.... again, i'm not saying someone is doing this now.) Of course if something happens and a bands' equipment breaks, it's reasonable to benefit from a friends work (luggin the cab) so that you can avoid having to spend tons of money on a replacement last minute. But lets look at this HYPOTHETICAL situation from a different angle, lets say that a band HAS the cab, but doesn't have transportation.... tricky.... In this circumstance there are cheaper options than the last situation (renting a UHAUL is much cheaper than the previous solution of buying replacement gear, but is it expensive enough for you to feel that it's fair of you to put the burden of using a cab that they had to transport, and that DOES accumulate wear and tear INSTEAD of you bearing the responsibility and renting the UHAUL? Lets look at a 3rd scenario, let's say that you have a cab, and you have the transportation, but you don't wanna move it, or you don't want to spend the extra time to move it... at this point, aren't you REALLY saying: "hey, i know that your band needs that cab, and that it's expensive, and that it's going to be a pain in the ass for you to get it down here.... but if i had to bring my cab, then "I" would have to deal with all that BS, so can i use your cab?" How does that last one sound? Kinda rude right? Don't get me wrong, i've totally borrowed shit from bands at shows forever, and i've come to realize that even though they're going to have the equipment with them anyways, I'm still willfully saving my own time while taking advantage of their time and effort. So what's to be done? Well, not something so different from what happened in this thread before my post. Someone was in need and asked, and offered to blaze with peeps who help em out. That's fair. Maybe you don't blaze though, buy them a couple rounds, or give them 20$ in gas money. Just make sure that you realize that it's your responsibility to have gear at your own show, and if you need to borrow it from someone, make sure you take into account that it's very inconsiderate to NOT look at it like a favor that you should reward.
