The open E chug breakdown got really popular in the late 90's, and early 2000's influx of metalcore bands. back then it was something new. it was kind of a post-modern concept in a way, the idea that you could accomplish something with just one note. but it was over used an abused so quickly, and so poorly that it really became a crutch for bands who had nothing new to offer. i think in 2004 theres no excuse to still be trying to force the same 1 note breakdown into every song. |

It was the idea that you could be tough (still having a heavy sound), and sensative (with psuedo-poetic lyrics, clean parts, and feminine in appearance). The end result was really just a mold for a prototypical "metalcore" band that everyone would follow, and that was never really any good to begin with. how emo got mixed into hardcore in the first place is beyond me. |
