Useless posturing aside, it's probably not actual hate more than frustration. I do think the arrangements are bland and predictable. That coupled with my lack of desire to need to hear any metal christmas songs is enough to not like them. Then around christmas I inevitably have the "You're into metal? You must LOVE TSO!" conversation a few times. |

I can see what you're saying there. Bland, however, I disagree. He has always focused on a good lyric and strong melodic hooks. Everything going on underneath that is secondary, which is why I like TSO: It's not Dream Theater, the music stays very simple and easy to follow while still bringing in heavy sounds. That, and seeing Skonick, Al Pitrelli, Chris Cafferty, J.L. Middleton, Jeff Plate, and on and on... playing together - that's just a big old christmas wishlist for me. |

When it comes to arrangements, I always like bouncing melodies, counter-melodies and the like around instrumentation and just a little less blunt use of certain themes. I get why TSO does what they do and how they do it, though. The formula is successful and still interesting to the majority of people willing to listen to it. Honestly, it's difficult to express what I would prefer, because I can't put myself in a situation where I could imagine what I would do to create metal inspired christmas music. It's just not in the ballpark for me. Seeing it live could possibly warm me up to it, I've never really even seen videos let alone actually go to experience it. |
