I'd only be interested if it said "Free College Girls from Yale"
- otherwise, wouldn't want to waste my time on the overhyped, overpriced Ivy League

I've thought about checking out the free MIT courses before but I never do since I won't be accumulating credits. It's the internet and books for me.

organized education is like organized religion: no individualism and personal constraints.
granted, I've got a degree but in all honesty, it's just a worthless piece of paper that says you've graduated. it's all about social status now. we have all the information we need in libraries, so it's time we all asks ourselves why we don't utilize that.

just because its in a book at the library doesnt mean its organized in a matter that can be understood fully by the reader. i dont see whats wrong with supplemental information.

Exactly why I dropped out of college. It felt like a lax extension of Highschool. I was working and was paying for school, so I had no life. Made sure as hell I passed those courses and got what credits I payed for though. Now even though I'm in a 9 to 5, I'm making really good money, without a degree.

ya same...everyone i know who has a degree also has reg unemployment checks. i droppedout after a semester to do drugs and play rock music instead. now i got my 40 hr a week "career" that pays the bills. i'm always looking to educate myself further with newly available information though.

there's nothing wrong with supplemental information. but therein lies that problem: Yale is using their power and status as a school to have these "free" courses, even though it's a crock o'shit. anyone could access this information (this professor's and others') at their own will at the library.
which is a dying cause - just another thing the internet is killing off

More power to you, and I agree with what you're saying, especially if you have the free time and want to accumulate more knowledge. It certainly can't hurt.

i will agree with that, jim. they are trying to put all the books from libraries on line with help of google. i'm guessing to censor useful information through a step process. the only thing hindering it is copywrite issues but laws seem to be constantly bypassed these days.

I plan on getting a PhD sometime but that's not gonna happen because I care more about music than organized schmeducation

A few libraries I've gone to recently have had jack shit. I'm sure if I went to the one down in Copley, it would be a different story though.

shouldn't be talking though; I clicked those links you gave. haha
I just think it's a stupid cause, that's all. but I've always been vocal about the Ivy League schools, even though some of my friends go to them. they worked their asses off to get in, but the same time you've got people going to those schools that have connections or relatives that went there.
I think the whole college system is messed up beyond belief.
what happened to the good old days when people desired to educate themselves without taking classes?
knowledge is something we can strive for, not slave for

What happened? It's like you said, it became a social status and requisite if you want certain, well paying job. Competing for a job against someone who has a college degree and you're lucky if you have your GED? We know who wins out on that one.

i definitely want to get a PhD too. step one: getting into grad school with a pretty unremarkable undergrad record

honestly, I mean I don't know either of you dudes that much, but I can tell you that you guys are way more intelligent than a lot of people I know that have degrees. it's a CROCK O' SHIT

yeah, really the only reason i want to go to grad school is so i can teach at college level. which is silly to me because i feel like "mastering" undergrad level material combined with the ability to teach would be enough. but i guess like most other fields, it's more or less a game of certification

and usually, but not always, along with the social status a degree has tied to it, an ego is there as well.

nothing worse than a stuck up snobby brat who thinks they're the best at everything.
that's why I like that scene in good will hunting so much when matt damon completely owns that dude. "HOW YOU LIKE THEM APPLES?"

yeah i hear that. the "psychological experiment" girl in the bova thread came across like that to a T. haha

There are free video lectures on iTunes too.

Is there a Yale class on making snide remarks about the Harvard rowing team while playing croquet?

i'll never forget walking around the MIT campus and asking students if they knew where the gym was. it literally took 8 tries
