Writer's Block

So I'm just about coming out of a serious 4- or 5-month long writer's block but it's getting harder and harder to break out of them.

I'm curious as to what you song writers do to help a serious cramp like mine.
Discuss.

I've had a music critic's writer's block for about a week or two. Had one a week or two before that... I understand!

Eh, listen to music? I've never really encountered writers block that didn't last the afternoon. That and weed is always inspiration. There's your answer: smoke weed or you are a pussy.

Start fuckin with a new scale, one position at a time and make sure you're learning the proper names of the notes- not just where you're putting your fingers. Try and write one or two decent riffs in each position before you move on to the next. By the time you've covered five or so positions, you should have enough tonally-related riffs to give you a skeleton to work with.

Personally, I like to start with a position that will put me somewhere between the 7th and 12th fret, then take it back around the open/1st fret.

If you don't already own the Guitar Grimoire, pick one up. Best $25 you'll ever spend.

If you're not down with the C Harmonic Minor scale already, that one gets my vote.

I've always experimented with writing other kinds of music. who knows, different for everybody.
honestly, and I know you don't do this, but smoking weed helps me out...

I write random midi symphonies, death metal, acoustic "rock," and pop punk type stuff. I don't think I need to write in more different styles. I've fucked with half the scales known to man (though I've been meaning to pick up the Guitar Grimoire anyway...maybe the other half are in there) and I don't smoke weed.
It's more just a mental block for me. I've written so many songs or snippets of songs that I feel like everything I do is unoriginal, even though I'm the one that wrote the "original." That, and I always feel like what I'm writing isn't good enough. I'm very critical of my writing.

Maybe I should start smoking w33d.

Dude, I hear you. I've got around 700 songs or snippets of songs I've written since 1995 and I think they all suck. The only way (at least to me) to be a better composer - not a musician, there's a difference - is to be very critical of your writing. Also, once an ego is developed,it's all over. There are millions of composers that are better than me, but I constantly strive to be better at writing music.

Yeah it sucks. I'm comparing my stuff to the highest tier compositions out there. All my non metal stuff: if it isn't as good as The Beatles or The Beach Boys, it's out the window. If my metal stuff isn't absolutely perfect. I hate it. I fucking hate Archaeon's EP. I wrote that stuff almost 3 years ago. I'm so different now but I hate my stuff just as much.

As far as lyric writing goes, I haven't written anything good since last year. I have a lot of things to write about but don't have the motivation to put thoughts on paper.

Writing blocks are hard to come out of.

I'd write new archaeon songs but they'd all be shitty pop punk.

impressive ideas, i have them all..
writer's block does not exist in the mind of the genius. all of your songs you think suck do, in fact, suck.

Just do something that will take you completely out of the box, like maybe try to write an intentionally bad song as cheesy as possible to get that out of your system, maybe you'll stumble across something worth noting in the process

In creative writing class in college, the professor had us write for 15-20 minutes before class started.

The point is to literally not think about anything, don't put any thought into what you're writting.

it gets all of the bullshit out of your system.

and when i'm writing, i read lyrics of really cryptic, mostly non metal singers.

like depeche mode
glassjaw
deftones
morrissey
norma jean.

just gets the creativity flowing, weather you like the bands or not.

i can't force myself to write music. once i get that initial riff idea, though, the rest of the song comes pretty quickly. no groundbreaking music, but i like to think it's at least a good example of the genre.

As mentioned above, weed does help. Not sure if you like to read, but I find that if I'm having a hard time writing riffs, I start a new novel. I don't know why, but something about reading novels makes my brain work a little better.

best thing to do is to start simple and then work in some little changes here and there, making it more technical.
