Christianity is only mainstream because of the freedom of religion in this country. Christians are pampered pussies, in my opinion, who completely miss the point when they sue someone for discrimination or persecution. If you fly over to the Middle East or communist countries like China, you could be jailed or shot on the street for professing Christ. So, only in America is it counter-culture. Bands have the freedom to express whatever viewpoint they hold. I understand where Metal comes from and what it's supposed to represent but you have to admit, the tide is changing. I believe that Metal was effectively and successfully "anti-status-quo" in the 80's because of the socio-political events that were taking place. In this generation, Metal is more accepted and even enjoyed. The anti-everything mentality has been watered down substantially, in my opinion. BUT I will admit that during the Bush administration, those feelings of hate and angst were rekindled.
Christianity has been mainstream throughout Europe since the middle ages. Until the 19th century, you could have been hanged in many different countries just for speaking out against the church. Art is a culturally specific medium. It would be fitting in, say, a country like China, to use metal or punk to profess Christ's teachings. Except, you'd probably end up with a life sentence. :HORNS:
