Based on personal observation it seems that as a musician you have a choice of playing for money or playing for the respect and admiration of people but you can't have too much of both. Everywhere I know of it seems like the less something pays the more people admire it.

From a supply and demand perspective, it makes sense that we would arrive at such a balance - the more other rewards you get from music, the less money you'll take to play it.
