I know dick about this shit but my brother asked me what would be better. He's been making a lot of stuff with FL Studio and wants to move on to bigger and better things.

Can any of you music nerds recommend any software?

what's he looking for? something to actually make music in or something to record?

FL can pretty much do anything you want, but it gets a little tricky when trying to do fills and things of that nature because it has a graphic clef as opposed to actual notation. the possibilities are still there though as long as you can finagle a way to make it work

it's hard to beat FL.
going from FL to REASON 1.0 was a wicked step backwards for me. I heard that they fixed a lot of the issues in REASON 2.0, but I never tried it.

Making FL do triplets made me want to blow my brains out, I can tell you that much. I'm imagining the versions they have out now can do it a little more intuitively, though.

once you get the hang of it it's easy. i did a song in FL the other day with triplets and it took me a while to size everything up right but once i did it went really fast

Well Reason doesn't record audio, it's basically a sequencer with a fuck load of synths (it does have a loop player / masher though)

Ableton Live does record audio, but its loop manipulation abilities far outshine its built-in synths, IMO. (there are cool extras you can buy, like Operator but that's more money)

I'm recording the new Hekseri demo on Logic Pro 7 (mac only) with drum machines from Reason 4.

*picks own nose*
