Double standard? Here's a crazy concept; When a child is misbehaving take away his/her favorite toy until he/she can earn it back. It teaches them value, importance, and appreciation. Of course on a very miniscule(sp.) level, but can be effective. I'm no child psychologist but praising the child for their efforts and accomplishments builds confidence and acceptance. Over time it will be obvious to them what side of mom/dad they want to see. By the way, my father carved a paddle out of a cutting board and used it when he found it necessary.
