The Golden Compass[views:4909][posts:7]_________________________________________ [Nov 27,2007 10:02pm - VoidExpression ""] Totally forgot this was coming out soon! The "christians" are just now getting their protests into gear, so it should be fun to see how that develops just in time for Christmas. Any fans of the books here? Pullman recently said this in an interview to get people all riled up: "I've been surprised by how little criticism I've got. Harry Potter's been taking all the flak. I'm a great fan of J.K. Rowling, but the people - mainly from America's Bible Belt - who complain that Harry Potter promotes Satanism or witchcraft obviously haven't got enough in their lives. Meanwhile, I've been flying under the radar, saying things that are far more subversive than anything poor old Harry has said. My books are about killing God." |

Motherfucking cult which wouldn't mean DICK if the Roman Emporor Constantine the First hadn't mandated the religion persecution, coverups, infringement on free speech, hypocrisy, operating tax free while the rest of us are out there trying to EARN A LIVING doodly-doo, derp-dee-derrr fuckit, it'll be around long after I'm gone anyway. Like pig shit. |

Just one that happens to straddle all the world borders, and with more funny hats. Very curious about this movie, BTW. |

________________________________________ [Nov 28,2007 9:43pm - VoidExpression ""] The books are a must read! I was completely obsessed with them five or so years ago and still reread them fairly regularly. The scale is ridiculously ambitious (especially considering the target audience are adolescents who don't know what they are getting themselves into), but it works pretty well and gets some good discussion on theology, innocence/original sin, etc. thrown in with the fantasy elements (which are also really well done). Even if the movie blows, I still think it's amazing that someone had the balls to adapt this and release it at Christmas and I have read online about possible pickets, so that could be worth the price of admission alone. It seems like they are going to keep fairly true to the book, and if they do that for the rest of the series this is going to be the single most blasphemous franchise in movie history as everything gets cranked to 11 in the final book. There is also some seriously violent bear carnage in the first book, so hopefully they leave that stuff in too. Should be interesting. |
