recommendations(Emperor)[views:10379][posts:44]______________________________ [Nov 27,2007 5:58pm - sean ""] Alright, so I'm in love with Emperor at the moment. I'd like some suggestions of other bands that do something similar. Zyklon and Insahn are for me pretty close. I'm not looking for a list of symphonic black metal bands, but rather acts that have the mastery of harmony that emperor has (ie. constant key changes, chromatic coloration, dark melody, epic song structure, dynamics). I'd call it progressive black metal. Anyone other bands out there as talented composers? Just to qualify for everyone: I like 90s Ulver Darkthrone, Mayhem, and 1349 are fine, but can be boring I'm not fond of Satyricon, Arcturs, Immortal or anything grim If the whole song is the same beat, you lost me zzzzzzzzzz |

_______________________________________ [Nov 27,2007 6:08pm - thuringwethil ""] yeah the not liking IMMORTAL part kinda surprised me, but hey. People don't understand why I don't care for death metal or grind anymore. Listening even within a certain genre can be pretty subjective, that's what makes you a listener. What I like most about black metal is finding weird innovative shit in places I least expect, then I can also find something totally repetitive and linear and get the same enjoyment how tr00 of me... or... |

______________________________ [Nov 27,2007 6:18pm - sean ""] I should add, though I don't consider them black metal, Extol kinda does the innovative dark progressive thing to my liking. |
______________________________ [Nov 27,2007 6:23pm - sean ""] I don't hate all immortal. Sons of Northern Darkness is an awesome song, however some of their stuff like "blashyrk mighty ravebdark" just bore me. |
_______________________________________ [Nov 27,2007 6:32pm - thuringwethil ""] actually Sons of the Northern Darkness is my least favorite album by them this thread is getting more and more interesting. Hm... |
_______________________________________ [Nov 27,2007 6:33pm - thuringwethil ""] anyhoo I like Leviathan and Judas Iscariot the most (the latter can be wayyyyyy repetitive, great fucking riffs though) |
______________________________________________ [Nov 27,2007 6:57pm - BobNOMAAMRooney nli ""] As Emperor became more "progressive" my interest in listening to them went to shit. I'm sure if you made a graph you'd see my interest drop sharply below the x-axis somewhere around that fruity Icaros song. |

______________________________________ [Nov 27,2007 7:55pm - Goatcatalyst ""] Check out Deathspell Omega. start with "si monumentum requires.. circumspice". and WORSHIP VON!!! |

_______________________________ [Nov 27,2007 11:40pm - sean ""] wow. enslaved is actually pretty ok. With a more imaginative drummer they could be awesome. I don't know how I never managed to check them out. I think my brain went, oh yeah, I've know entombed - campy wolverine blues |

_______________________________ [Nov 28,2007 12:30am - sean ""] Cool. Given what's posted on the grimmest and wintriest of all web domains, myspace, I like enslaved, kvist, Deathspell Omega, Peccatum, Hollenthon, and Windir (on the mountain of goats!). I found Embraced to be great, I'm gonna have to pick up Amorous Anathema. Dissection is also great, as they are not Dismember, more of my Entombed syndrome. haha However, I had mixed feelings about Bathory, Abaroth, Judas Iscariot, and Leviathan, who's name I wish wasn't claimed yet. Thanks to everyone who made a suggestion. Though none of these bands is Emperor, I've got a bunch of new albums to dl "evaulation copies" of. Thanks. |

_______________________________ [Nov 28,2007 12:35am - sean ""] aril - Sorry, yeah the drumming on Frost is just fine. I was referring to the drumming on Ruun and Isa. Nothing wrong with it - just something more imaginative would be nice. |

I didn't call Arcturus grim. I said I didn't really like them. Grim black metal is also something that's not my fancy. I can appreciate when ppl say Arcturus is progressive black metal, because they do make an honest effort to innovate the genre, but I feel they haven't succeeded in making anything great, just different. Some of their stuff is fine, but often I feel like I'm listening to the Barnum and Bailey meets Cirqu d'solei soundtrack. |

______________________________________ [Nov 28,2007 2:10am - Goatcatalyst ""] For that "Nightside" atmosphere, Drudkh really does it for me - especially the Autumn Aurora album. And I can't fucking get enough Old Wainds, Averse Sefira, Arkhon Infaustus, Blut Aus Nord, Nightbringer and Kroda - not that any of those sound much like Emperor but they definitely distinguish themselves from the herd. And if you're looking for something that will rip your fucking face off, check out Infernal War, Impiety or Antaeus' album "Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan". And then there's always the Thorns Trondertun tape... but I ain't one to gossip. |

The early stuff is a far cry from their later work; I like both eras, but you may want to give them a second listen. Aegathis said: speaking of soundtracks, check out diabolical masquerade. Dragonlord is a good call; not everyone's cup of tea, but from what you've already stated that you liked, this may be a score. I was gonna suggest Drudkh, but I figured they'd be a bit too droney/hypnotic for his tastes. But check it out, anyway; they've definitely got the harmonic complexity it sounds like you're looking for. Plus they rule wicked hahd, dood. |
_______________________________ [Nov 28,2007 10:46am - Yeti ""] Blut Aus Nord has an incredible vibe. so you don't like Satyricon? i can undestand not liking the garbage on Now, Diabolical and Volcano, but the atmosphere on The Shadowthrone and Dark Medieval Times is untouchable. Nemesis Divina is one of the greatest works ever recorded, but it doesn't have the same vibe as the aforementioned. you say you are not a fan of anything grim, but then say Darkthrone is ok. it doesn't get much grimmer than Under A Funeral Moon. you should give it another shot. definitely check out Storm of the Light's Bane by Dissection, that has a very similar vibe to In the Nightside Eclipse. |
_______________________________ [Nov 28,2007 10:47am - Yeti ""] oh yeah and Dragonlord is badass, Rapture is definitely the best work, but Black Wings of Destiny is awesome too. |

It just takes some time to get used to. It took me about a 3 listens to like them. The first listen was about a year before the last 2. I definately dig it. Its a good band to get stoned and listen to. That and dredg. Not sure if anyone likes them or not. |
_______________________________ [Nov 28,2007 1:20pm - aril ""] Honestly man, how could you be intrigued by Embraced when you're looking for a band that sounds somewhat similar to Emperor? Embraced is Swedish Melodic Death with 2 keyboard players. I'm not saying I don't like them but there is absolutely no similarity between those bands other than the "proggish" parts. The moods are completely different. Check out the Portuguese band "Sirius" if you like Emperor Anthems and beyond. I personally don't dig it too much but it's very similar at parts and I think (can't remember) Samoth had something to do with the production. |
___________________________________ [Nov 4,2009 10:28am - arktouros ""] Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise One of my favorite bands....I just don't know about this album. This is the first time I've sat down and listened to it. Track 2 - The riffs alone are sick, but it's not squeezing my balls like Anthems does. Starting to feel disappointment creeping in... |

___________________________________ [Nov 4,2009 10:37am - arktouros ""] That song "Empty" rocks. But this doesn't feel like Emperor, just a very competent imitation. I think I knew this and that's why I've been avoiding it. This is decent so far, but IX Equilibrium and all before cannot be touched. It reminds me more of Ihsahn's solo stuff which is good but missing the energy and composition that made Emperor great. |
