Mecklenburg-Volpmmern, a state in the northeast of Germany along the Baltic coast and home to Angela Merkel, has been seen as a thorn in the reigning German Chancellor ‘s side following such victories by the neo-Nazi party. Prior to the elections, it was anticipated that the National Democratic Party would receive between 4.8 and 7 percent of the vote, far surpassing the 5 percent necessary to hold seats in parliament. This was revealed as a nerve racking fact considering that following the collapse of the Third Reich, only once in the 1960’s had the NPD even threatened achieving seats in parliament. As it turned out, the neo-Nazi party claimed 7.3 percent of the vote, achieving more than many analysts had expected. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern became the second state with the National Democratic Party having attained parliamentary seats in all of the German republic. But while many would perceive such revival as merely an uprising of disgruntled youth, there are signs that point the other way. Despite preconceived neo-Nazi notions, not one skinhead nor hooligan could be found amongst the crowd. The dissent of unemployment and civil strife now extends beyond the impoverished youth, but also fills the elders of the generation. Forty-Seven-year-old Herr Andrejewski joined the rally, peering beyond his thick, gold rimmed glasses approvingly. The Jerusalem Post quoted Charlotte Knobloch, head of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, as calling the results "shocking, and a political statement of bankruptcy." She urged politicians to "go on a committed offensive against increasing right-wing extremism." Much of the urgency is anticipated by the knowledge of the increase in neo-Nazi violence.
