| ________________________________ [Oct 2,2006 9:55am - mcmahon ""] Variables: temperature, pH, water quality, addition of soap or solvents Higher temperatures may increase the frequency of the stink and will cause the gas molecules to get excited and rise faster than the cooler ones. The pH of the water will affect what phase the nitrogen and sulfur complexs are in. Assuming pH around 7, i doubt there is conversion of methane or hydrogen sulfide between your anerobic asshole and the surface of the water. Anything significantly higher or lower in pH which would change them into a different form would probably cause a rash or burn. So pH I don't think pH is an issue here. Water quality is important, but not really an issue here. As I listed earlier, pH determines what form the nitrogen or sulfur complex is in. If there are are high concentrations of either, your stink is the least of your worries. If sulfur rich, you would probably notice the stench of your water as it came out of your faucet, or, if nitrogen rich, your kids would also be fucked (blue baby syndrome, etc). That's a good indicator you have bad water. Another issue could be the use of solvents (or soap) which breaks the surface tension of the water molecules (which is why you get cleaner with soap than without). This could cause the stink to penetrate the water droplet and linger until you inhale it. Best bet, try an experiment under each of the conditions: 1. Hot water, soap 2. Hot water, no soap 3. Cold water, soap 4. Cold water, no soap Record the time from release to time when you first smell your own shit. Let me know your results. Do replicates of each condition. I can put them into a statistics program which will evaluate it to account for human error. Hoser, you should be all over this. |

It's obvious that the smell still permeates the air to some extent, but it's really missing that awful edge. Therefore, I am wondering if the methane molecules somehow bond with the hydrogen or oxygen molecules that are present in the water, therefore greatly diminishing the smell of the fart. It's a strange concept, but I would find this to be a very interesting topic on a show such as Mythbusters, or the subject of a lecture. I might actually take notes. Any other ideas? |
