sacreligion said:
if you assume low numbers, it means you didn't bother to try to get high numbers(im talking about getting all of our friends to come out and have a good time on top of who would come regularly and on top of promotion...if they decide they don't wanna show up for not only our cd release, but the fact that two of us have our birthdays that night and would rather stay home and do nothing/smoke pot...i will seriously never talk to any of those people again)
Ha ha, dude, I am so with you on this it's not even funny, you sound like the me in your band :) It's such an important part of promotion in the underground scene to make a list (at least in your head) of every person that might possibly go to the show, and then do everything you can to see that each of them does. In the end, if you end up grabbing 2/3 of those possibles, you've done really well for yourself. But Tony is definitely right on low expectations being better for a band's mood and motivation. Still, nonetheless, I sometimes find myself raising expectations, just in the course of promoting in the way I explained above (because you already have all these numbers in your head and you'd LIKE to assume that most of the fans/friends/acquaintances who saying they're probably going aren't full of shit). If only there were a middle ground that involved both getting high turnout and retaining low expectations; in otherwords, working on every person who might possibly come but still expecting absolutely nothing so you can be pleasantly surprised at the show.
