BornSoVile said:
sever said:
The french took over mexico city, and believed the mexicans would surrender like every other good european country did when their capitol was taken. but they didnt, and managed to own the french all the way back to the sea. in turn this helped the outcome of the american civil war, as the french would have then come in on the side of the confederates, and the brits would then have enough motivation to come in from canada and we'd be fucked because hten the confederate states would exist, and france and britain would have territorial claims over the north.
okay this is logical, but i'm just confused about how it helped the civil war. what about the french with the confederates? were they going to be on their side if they stayed in mexico or did they end up on their side after they left. i had a hard time making sense from your passage.
if they won against mexico, they would have then used mexico as a place to station their troops in order to attack the united states and reclaim territory - and what a more opportune time than a civil war. the british at this point were debating whether or not to get involved because they would be fighting alongside slaveholders, and slavery was banned in england. it wasn't until lincoln's emancipation proclamation that they decided not to. if the french had come in, this would have more than likely motivated the british to come in so that they could make territorial claims also. territories at this time were like a way of judging the status of a empire - thye more you had, the more powerful you were, and the less people would fuck with you.
