i managed to grab this puppy on ebay for 180 bucks, loaded with a duncan jb in the bridge and a hardcase. just got it today, and it plays pretty damn good. i needed a better backup to my solist. not bad for under 200 bucks. its in mint condition too.

for those who care, this guitar will always be in either his trunk or the back of his car unless he's playing a show or letting someone borrow it.

whoa brian. not sticking with the traditional les paul shape. besides the mockingbird i dont remember you having a non-les paul shaped guitar. am i wrong about that? probably huh?

seymour duncans are more or less the only pickups worth putting into a guitar.

if you cant afford an emg 81, you mean.
 _____________________________
[Jul 1,2005 6:00pm - blue ""]
the jackson alone retails for about 350. the duncan would be around 60, and the case at about 80. so id say this was a pretty sweet deal.

[Jul 1,2005 6:01pm - powerkok ""]
thats a decent price only cuz it came with a case though.
its a performer....200 is the norm for those.

its only a backup right?

I thought they discontinued performers years ago??

yes, its only a backup. and yes, they discontinued the performers 5 years ago. its a decent deal ONLY because it came with a case? did you not see the duncan in it that takes the place of the HORRID jackson humbucker that would normally reside in its place?

ya, I saw that....thats cool and all, but a 50 dollar seymour jb dosent replace the fact that its a bolt on.
And that duncans are midrangy.
Its all taste, but IMO, Id leave the stock pu in until I could afford an EMG 81.

[Jul 1,2005 6:12pm - blue ""]
there is absolutely nothing wrong with midrange. midrange is the voice of the guitar. all emgs are is high end distortion. no need for a high output high end fizzy pickup when youve got enough gain to begin with.

rule #1: midrange is good.
 _____________________________
[Jul 1,2005 6:13pm - blue ""]
and i very much understand the bolt on comment, but i have needed a more reliable backup for quite some time.

i dont like 81s at all, by the way.

I hear ya man....Im all about the mid scoop, because I have enough mids for 3 motherfuckers.

btw...Im not bashing yer new axe at all....I had 2 performers, (ps6t kelly and ps3t rrv) and even with stock pickups, they sounded great, thru my amp.

I won the rrv on ebay w/case for 182.50 w/case and the kelly for 212.

im not getting all riled up, i just love having guitar discussions. but i cant handle midrange scoop at all. it may be fine for practice amp playing, but once you crank a mid scoop sound to band volumes, all you are doing is competing with the high range of the cymbals and the lows of the kick drum. midrange allows you to cut through the mix.

i dont use stock pickups ever, unless theyre duncans. case in point, my soloist. settling for stock pickups is like saying 'im fine with going through my practice amp for shows. you can always do better.

very well said...I've scorned the scooped mids since getting a tube amp

oh, Craig...I only have that one Les Paul...just happened to have been playing it since I've played guitar (with a small break to go through my Mockingbird phase)

I love non-trem...it's a personal tone thing.

those things fucking rule, especially for a bolt on. 27 frets, cant beat that.

my point is, I scoop my mids and still have ample mids....if I didnt scoop em, Id have a Tele twang thing goin....not my thing at all.

If you like the JB's....try a dropsonic, theyre comprable and I think youd like the drop sonic's clarity.

Also....again, not bashing the ps2, but y in the HELL do they even include a middle pickup?
does anyone EVER use this?
also a single coil in the neck looks god awful to me, esp. with a middle single.

2 humbuckers or bust IMO.
(ps-4)

dimarzios parts are overall less quality, for the same price as a duncan.

ya blue, but really, they arent any less effective or chinsy.
dimarzio's are a little cheaper.

I never liked dimarzio either, but I decided to try em, and Im happy with it.

on another note, I just researched these smokey amps.....the cig pack amp....and somehow, that thing will power a 4x12 cabinet!!!

wtf?!?!

The dimarzio X2N pickup is probably the most diverse pickup for metal, while pretty much every SD and EMG pickup is a 'one trick pony'

Bolton makes no difference, Neck construction can be related with sustain, but given a proper setup, all three will sustain fine. And it's not like you need tons of sustain for fast picking metal. String brand and size has more of an overall pull on your sustain and sound than neck construction. Neck construction has about as much pull on your sound as headstock shape.

an x2n is waaaaaaay too high output for me, id much rather prefer a medium output pickup that can handle the cleans much better.

a jb is far from a one trick pony, in my opinion.

[Jul 3,2005 6:58pm - NiccolaiNLI  ""]
From my experience, the JB is all bite and no crunch, but yea, the X2n has high output but when compressed correctly, the cleans are great.

[Jul 3,2005 7:16pm - blue ""]
have you ever tried a duncan custom? a bit more output than a jb, but boosted mids yielding a tone similar to that of a beefed up paf.
