TerribleNightSteve said:
There are definitely varying degrees of cruelty and what one person considers cruel may not be seen as cruel to another. However, you can be sure that if there is money to be made from animals, there will be cruelty as well. Businesses that deal with animals are just that, businesses. They make money by selling their products, animals. When people stop thinking of animals as living creatures and instead consider them in terms of profits and losses, there will be cruelty. I am speaking mostly of "factory farms" because an extremely large percentage of the meat and other animal products in this country come from them. I don't know about local farms, maybe they slaughter their animals in a nice way if you think such a thing is possible. As far as fur goes, the nature of the industry is cruel. The killing of animals for fur is usually conducted by bashing their heads in or anal electrocution so as to not damage the fur. I think that PETA has no choice but to show the horrible things that happen. You can tell people these things are happening a million times but to show them is to make them really understand. I don't think it's possible to describe the suffering that some animals go through so we can have fur, boots, and steaks so actually showing it is necessary. If there weren't groups such as PETA to investigate these things, I don't even want to imagine what else would be going on. Sorry for that ridiculously long-winded post but this is one of the only topics I feel very strongly about.
not as long winded as mine, haha; i can definitely see your point and i respect it as well. i guess my definition of cruelty to animals is the shit that peta exploits, as well as the millions of other circumstances unseen by cameras or eye witnesses. i come from a very very boring farm town/area and i know many people who work at these farms. most of them are horsefarms, but some of the livestock farms in the area let cows and whathaveyou live a healthy life, then lop off their heads or break their necks, so death is instantaneous rather than drawn out and painful. that may seem cruel to others, but as far as i see it, there are much worse choices to be made. i also work for a restaurant food supplier that is very careful about where they get their meat; needless to say, there are definitely some cruel and unconventional aspects to at least 1 product we receive, but that's the luck of the draw. in my eyes, it's survival of the fittest as i said in my first post on this thread. bears, lions, and all those scary creatures brutally tear apart their prey and eat every last bit of what can be ingested. even though the human mind is more "advanced" if you want to call it that, we still are part of the food chain and have to survive one way or another. some people kill their food differently than others, and it will always happen to our liking or disliking no matter what. s ome of us may choose to survive on vegetables, fungus, soy and other earthen foods, and some of us choose to take a carnivorous/omnivorous approach. i have no problem with any views on this matter or one's choice of diet, just as long as it's not forced down my throat and preached about incessantly (which you have not done either of, so i thank you kind sir). as far as fur goes, i'm against it. maybe it would be different if chincillas, minks, and other fluffy cuddly creatures were used for more than just "fashion" and not skinned alive or tortured. i say if you're going to kill something you might as well eat all that you can, make clothing and other garments with it's outer layer and do something else constructive with the bones. but that's just my opinion...i could go on and on about this, but i doubt many people want to read it, haha. it has been a lovely debate, but i gotta get some rest.
