Microsoft Surface 2/pro[views:33378][posts:88]_____________________________________ [Oct 9,2013 2:08pm - the_reverend ""] So does anyone have one of the originals? Anyone getting the new one? My home desktop is on it's last legs and costing me $30 a month in electricity. I started turning it off and not using it, but it takes 25 minutes to start back up which sucks. Basically, I'm looking for a desktop replacement and figured that this would be a good thing to try to see if I can ditch my boat anchor of a desktop. The bonuses are that I can't sort photos, etc... on the road with it and not have to whip out a laptop. Very useful at larger shows so I don't have to sit just playing on my phone while awful local or national bands play. Also, I'm going to use it to run my radio show. It will replace my desktop and then either it will become my desktop when the dock comes out or my laptop will become my desktop. We shall see. The only problem is that it's 1/2 as fast as my laptop (though as fast as my current desktop)... and with a 10% discount, the surface pro 2 256GB SSD 8GB RAM + a type cover is $1299.90. Still, not bad since it will replace everything else. |
_____________________________ [Oct 9,2013 2:26pm - ark ""] The Surface Pro is a badass machine. It's the best tablet you can get hardware-wise, and it's the only one that's also an actual PC with real Windows. The artist from Penny Arcade http://penny-arcade.com/ uses it to do some of his comics with Photoshop and draws right on the screen, he's written about the Surface a lot in the archives. Don't let the 1/2 as fast thing fool you, you won't notice much difference. There's also games like Civ V that support touch. I would totally get one if it wasn't $1300 but IMHO that thing is worth it. |
_____________________________________ [Oct 9,2013 2:58pm - the_reverend ""] thanks for the point out on penny arcade http://www.penny-arcade.com/2013/09/24/the-surface-2 The big difference between the 1/2 for me is the battery life. 7hrs of battery life seems what I want. I have a 3-4hr laptop and I find it frustrating. 7hrs seems perfect. I'm curious how it will deal with batteries when you close the cover. The brilliant thing about the iPad is that when I'm not using it, it still gets emails/txt/etc... faster than my phone, but the battery usage is a about 10-15% per day. If I leave it just sitting in my bag with 100% change and don't use it, the next day it's still at 88% (as long as blue tooth is off that is). |
_____________________________________ [Oct 9,2013 3:02pm - the_reverend ""] I keep wondering if this will mean I don't need my iPad anymore. Problem is that my iPad has cell and there are apps that I can't live without on the iPad: 1) Logmein 2) Adobe Ideas 3) Google Voice 4) snapseed 5) Paper 6) chrome 7) hipstamatic 8) instagram 9) facebook app I'm really interested in how the pen works. Right now, if I want to reply to someone, I usually have to draw on the ipad, save it out to the camera roll, upload it to dropbox, then download it on my desktop and send it from the email. |
_____________________________ [Oct 9,2013 3:17pm - ark ""] i'm pretty sure those apps are on the microsoft store and i don't think you can get cell service on the surface. yeah the ipad is great for deep sleep battery life, i'm not sure about the surface on that. since it's full-on windows, i have my doubts on that one. |

I mostly got it so I could have the art programs that came with it. |

If I were the designer, I would have a de-sleep co-processor with memory access. An ARM that handles some of the sleeping functions. would be awesome. |

I just need to get it to drive 2 monitors... maybe USB to HDMI. I guess I will get into some PC gamining... maybe emus on my big TV too... [YOUTUBEv=elSXvnC9HaE] bennyhillifier |

______________________________________ [Oct 16,2013 4:49pm - the_reverend ""] http://bradleystrategygroup.com/30-days-with-surface-pro/ good info there. IDK what is going to happen. I love my iPad. I love plenty of games on it. I love drawing on it. I just don't see myself carrying around an iPad AND a surface pro. |
______________________________ [Oct 16,2013 9:32pm - ÆRK ""] you'll still have your ipad. if you want a desktop replacement you'll get it, and i don't think you'll be lacking if you are just carrying around the surface. you'd be walking around with a frigging PC that's the same size. |
_____________________________________ [Oct 16,2013 9:34pm - xanonymousx ""] i'd wait to see what apple is doing on the 22nd |
_______________________________________ [Oct 17,2013 12:11am - the_reverend ""] apple is putting out a new ipad, mac book, and something else. I hope they put out a cover like the surface. Funny that apple is doing this the day that the surface comes out. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 17,2013 12:11am - the_reverend ""] they have also been saying iPad mini with retina. |
______________________________________ [Oct 25,2013 3:10pm - the_reverend ""] I'm having a dilly of a pickle with this thing. It's "neat" but I don't see my use for it yet. I will have a better understanding once I do a radio show with it. We shall see. The battery life seems to be weird and unpredictable. When I crank anything on it, it chews battery life. The screen is always too big and too small. I can't seem to find a balance there. The touch interface is weird. I can't use chrome for gmail cause I touch the screen and emails go into folders or idk what. Sometimes the touch interface needs the pen... some times it needs my fingers. it seems like they expect you to use the pen AND your fingers at the same time. the type 2 cover is great EXCEPT for the touch pad on it. That is just a plain awful experience. two finger scrolling is unpredictable at best. It also doesn't seem to take a double tap input. So moving things is a pita that I just end up touching the screen for. |
______________________________________ [Oct 25,2013 3:12pm - the_reverend ""] with no cover on it, the screen is constantly turning on. the pen is wicked easy to lose. I'm getting a mini-display port adapter to see how it works with my monitors. I think that is where I'm going to "love" it. It is too bad that the docking station is 4 months out cause I would want to try it on that with my 2 monitors. |
______________________________________ [Oct 31,2013 1:41am - the_reverend ""] So... The surface 2 is getting rave reviews as a tablet from what I see. I entered a contest and it looks like I won one free! |
______________________________ [Oct 31,2013 9:57am - ark ""] more on it from PA http://penny-arcade.com/2013/10/28/surface-pro-2 |
_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2013 11:05am - the_reverend ""] I wish the pen had a better holder. one this I don't like about the pen is that as I tip the pen to 45 Degree angle, the spot that it things that the pen is on gets wonky. Anyhow, one note with the pen is AWESOME. I wish wish wish I had that in highschool and college. It would have rocked. I'm starting to hook it up to multiple monitors and it's working really well there. This might just become a pricy desktop replacement. Driving 2x4K monitors from it when the docking station comes out will be cool. I did plug it into the USB of my monitors to get the KB/Mouse and it wouldn't recognize it. That was weird. I haven't plugged a hub into it before then. Next, I need a hdmi-usb connector that does 2048x1154 resolution. So on the comment I made above. I entered a contest for music and it seems that I won. The prize is a Surface 2 (the RT version of windows) and the Remix pad cover for doing music. The Surface 2 is compared to the iPad and doesn't run a full version of windows. http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-31747_7-57608...r-vs-surface-2-vs-galaxy-note-10.1/ the amazing things about the Surface 2 is that people are getting 14hrs of battery life out of it. this is the remix pad thing. I'm hoping to try and get it to work with traktor. heh. bennyhillifier |
_____________________________________ [Nov 3,2013 3:19pm - the_reverend ""] so I'm liking this thing more and more. It's just a little weird. I wished they would update chrome to work better. |
__________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 10:08am - brian_dc ""] I'm thinking about replacing my stolen laptop with this thing. It would be feel pretty much free to me since I'm covered under renter's insurance...I barely used my laptop before it was stolen since I have a work laptop and a kindle fire. Rev do you recommend? |
______________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 10:30am - the_reverend ""] Like I said, I'm liking it more and more. Still not 100% sold on it. I could get by in life with just an iPad and a work laptop for everything if I needed too. If you don't have a need for something like this right now, just get an external hd for storage and use what you have. If you need to do things that you can't get done with fire/work laptop, then this is a good alternative. It's just a little pricy if you aren't going to use it. I definitely like disconnecting from power all day. |
______________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 10:33am - the_reverend ""] I got this to 1) replace my aging desktop that was sucking $30+ in energy a month 2) work on pictures at concerts 3) not have to bring my 15.6" laptop with me to the radio show So far, it hasn't really done any of those things.. still working on it though. |
__________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 10:39am - brian_dc ""] I'm in a unique position which is pushing me toward trying this. I was not going to even replace my personal laptop when it got stolen. But it was so old that all of the insurance compensation for it was only going to be passed along if I replaced it. So now I feel like if I don't get something I'll be throwing away $1000 or so. I figure it's a good chance to try a newer technology. |
______________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 11:04am - the_reverend ""] oh, if that is the case... I would DEF get one. One good thing about this is that it comes with 200GB of skydrive which I didn't think I would like or care about at all until it started to integrate itself into my machines. |
______________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 11:09am - the_reverend ""] I love being able to get up, walk to the bathroom and still keep my machine with me. Going to bed and get to do more than I can with other machines and not really worrying about the battery. The only think I don't like about it is that gmail doesn't work very well through chrome yet. Lots of apps aren't updated for the DPI of the screen. When I try to use chrome for gmail and I end up moving things around. |
______________________________________ [Nov 4,2013 11:18am - the_reverend ""] last night I saw a demo of the surface pro connected to 8 external hd monitors. |

______________________________________ [Nov 13,2013 1:03pm - the_reverend ""] I got photoshop running on it now. I'm pretty happy with it. I can't wait for the docking station to come out for it so I can use it on my 2 monitors and totally get rid of my desktop. The day I can replace my 2 monitors with 1 or 2 4K 32" monitors will be my next happy day. |
______________________________________ [Nov 13,2013 1:04pm - the_reverend ""] I also unplugged last night. went to a show, then came home looking at 32Gb of pictures.. loaded photoshop a few times and did some photoshopping. fell asleep with it on and it's still got 30% battery. |

______________________________________ [Nov 15,2013 2:39pm - the_reverend ""] did you get the type cover 2? I was having an issue with that if I folded it backwards. Come to find out that is not how you are suppose to do it. You are suppose to unclick flip and reclick so that the keys are hidden on the back of the tablet. weird. |
__________________________________ [Nov 15,2013 2:49pm - brian_dc ""] I'm still waiting on it. It was shipped separately and incredibly slowly. I've been using a USB hub and a wireless keyboard, but I will definitely keep that in mind...not at all how I thought it would work. |
______________________________________ [Nov 19,2013 1:15pm - the_reverend ""] My surface2 came yesterday. It is pretty freaking awesome. I just don't like that there is basically not much in the way of apps for it. The Surface RT would be killer if they could get more people to develop games for it. One thing I like is that the Surface2 is thinner and comes with Office 365. Should be great. |
______________________________________ [Nov 19,2013 1:34pm - the_reverend ""] I wish the Surface Pro 2 was more like the Surface2... size, battery life, etc... |
