coming off of 495 on to 95n in northern mass. and all the power went out of my car. I was able to run on the electric engine a mile or so to a gas station right off exit 60.
my 13.2 gallon tank took 16gallons that day.

Just curious. Do you own or lease your hybrid?
 ______________________________________
[Mar 15,2007 1:10pm - the_reverend ""]
own

[Mar 15,2007 1:11pm - the_reverend ""]
since leases are like 12K-15K miles per year, I would have to stop driving around may each year.

I was just thinking about the cost for repairs and such, but that makes perfect sense.

I haven't had anything to rapair yet. but the maintenance on it is a bit price. like $100-300 whenever I bring it in.

Yea but you'd be giving the Japanese MORE money...

And I know how much you hate the Japanese Pam.

Does it go really slowly when it's running solely on the electric motor?

I'd heard that the electric motor doesn't go any faster than 40, or maybe what I heard was if you're driving over 40, the car doesn't use the electric motor... I can't remember.

do hybrids really live up to all the hype? on paper they certainly do, but will a honda or toyota hybrid last as long as a regular honda or toyota?
 __________________________________
[Mar 15,2007 3:08pm - brian_dc ""]
clearly this can't be known for sure since it's such a young technology. But on paper, again, I see no reason why they wouldn't last as long as regular ol' cars.

I have a honda civic hybrid and it's the only hybrid that is a standard. it rules. I just figured out why when I got new tires, the gas milage dropped 10%. it's cause the tires I got were bigger so it only seems like the mileage went down.

I do over 40mpg.

the civics aren't suppose to run on just the electric motor. that's toyotas that do that. the civic is like a pussy gas engine with an electronic turbo charger. so last night I was running on the turbo charger only.

[Mar 15,2007 3:18pm - the_reverend ""]
also, electric engines have constant torque so that they can spin up the gas engine to 1000rpms immediately. they basically have the best power from take off. gas engines don't. so if you kept turning your gas engine on/off by it's self, you would waste more gas getting it to 1000rpm. with the electric engine doing it, you save gas. so the engine will just click itself off. the only thing that sucks is you need to push the clutch all the way in for the gas engine to kick back on.. oh that has caused some issues.

I bought my hybrid for about 2-3K more than the car without. I figured 2-3K over 48months to support a technology that should be in all our cars? damn right. if all the 10-25mpg shit boxes out there were upgraded, then gas would be cheaper and so would the technology.

Word. If I were legally allowed to drive, I would totally drive a hybrid.

2-3k more is nothing. The savings in gas I'm sure far outweighs that price difference. My old lady said something about considering buying a hybrid. I think in about 48 months the technology will pretty much be in a good portion (at least 1/2) of cars produced....unless they come out with something else. Do you have to plug it in to charge it when you're home? (I know, it may sound like a dumb question - just wondering)

[Mar 15,2007 4:01pm - the_reverend ""]
no, you can't plug it in.
it doesn't make sense to plug in the civics anyhow.

I only have 25 months left before the 48 months are up and I've don't 83K miles.

I be the convo with your old lady went like this:
"I want to get a hybrid" - her
"no fucking way, get a car that runs on the burning hearts of muslims and shut up." - you

Well if you want/need and SUV, which my mother does, and you care about the environment/saving $$ on gas, then NO. A hybrid SUV isn't an oxy moron as implied above...

Thats the thing. I would LOVE if Subaru had a Forester or Outback hybrid. I'd be all over it as soon as I could afford it. But i'd look like a fool getting all my gear into a prius or a fucking Civic.

woah, do have my house bugged or something? Either that, or you know me all too well....

She's actually pretty hard line like myself. I mean, it shouldn't be much of a surprise. Otherwise, there would be no way she'd be able to put up with my rants and stubborn opinions if she didn't at least agree with me somewhere in the 80 sum odd percentile.
WTF is bluray? is that some sort of transitional technology like laserdiscs that will shit out after a year or two?

i have a new civic but its not a hybrid coupe... it was like 5 grand extra.... ps the insight(hybrid) is stick shift as well. unfortunately it only holds 2 people. why are there no hybrid civic coupes? and they make the roof higher so it doesnt look as good as the others. im pretty certain it has nothing to do with the hybrid aspects.

ps i think the milage difference is like 150% of mine. im rated at 40 hwy and i think u r @ 60

I'm rated 50-ish highway, but now that there is ethanol, my milage went down 10% from that.

yea i usually get like 30 something for somereason i thought u were rated higher... maybe thats the ugly ass prius. i know the insight is 66mpg

Think of it this way...great gas mileage, but after so much time with the electric motor, look at all of the batteries you have to replace.

And no, they don't make ones you can plug in yet.

[Mar 16,2007 12:33am - sxealex ""]
um yea they do... infact the insight has a windpower charger kit u can buy. plus electric cars are pretty good... just fuel companies/govt are being cocks about that shit. i havent seen it but i heard the documentary called who killed the electric car is good. these cars are for rich people and fucking fast as shit but i mean if mass produced im sure they wouldnt cost that much. http://www.teslamotors.com/

[Mar 16,2007 12:43am - immortal13 ""]
Yeah, but exotic cars like that aren't exactly ever mass produced. Not to mention that's not exactly an original design, cuz it looks just like a Saleen S7 (the car in Bruce Almighty). Give me a fucking GTO or Barracuda any day and I'll show you torque.

[Mar 16,2007 12:55am - sxealex ""]
ive never heard of a gto doing a 4 second flat 0-60. it takes a fast sports bike to get 3 seconds... as for torque this thing has no drive train. sooo its all how the motor is adjusted. but i was trying to say in the first place that having an electric car that was not a super car is feasible if one this crazy is under 100,000. Im really happy with my civic... if you could make something along these lines that has twice the 0-60 time for a little less im sure it would get alot of use. yea sure u cant do long road trips but circa 250miles is pretty good for a daily driver. maybe gas stations could actually switch out battery cells kinda like they do with propane tanks so people dont have to wait 3 hours for a charge.

That would actually be a good idea. You should email the mobile or exxon headquarters and tell them that idea. Make a convenient store even more convenient.
