Winter Camping[views:11801][posts:81]_______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 1:58pm - sigh ""] arilliusbm said:Nah, I don't want to do it for that. I just want to hike in the winter or perhaps cross country ski. Wouldn't hurt to have a base or a place to crash. Just gotta be prepared. And you can do all these things and still stay in a small cabin with a wood stove. Just saying sleeping outside is unnecessary for what you are going to do. |

I love being outdoors, whether upland bird or duck hunting, fishing open water or ice-fishing. Been out in nasty conditions in all instances. It's just much better to come indoors at the end of the day, get dry, and get drunk. |

Im not discluding a cabin idea by any means, but its the safe way to do it. herugrim writing session in cabin or gtfo? You see that right their is the problem. I know you think it will be fun. But trust me, it isn't going to be as fun as you think when you've got no fire and you're huddled together to share warmth. How much practice do you have making fire? What about with wet materials? Assume you lose your lighter, did you bring a fire steel and some dry tinder? Do you have a survival saw to cut dryer wood from higher up on the trees? Bring any thermal blankets? There is a lot more to being prepared than packing a sleeping bag, a tent, and some pieces of armpit pizza. Part of being prepared is knowing your limitations and respecting the situation. Speaking from personal experience my advice is to enjoy winter but do it safely and comfortably whenever possible. |

In topography, prominence, also known as autonomous height, relative height, shoulder drop (in North America), or prime factor (in Europe), categorizes the height of the mountain's or hill's summit by the elevation between it and the lowest contour line encircling it and no higher summit. It is a measure of the independence of a summit. Below is an except from a ranking of US peaks by prominence. [img] |
