Winter Camping[views:11795][posts:81]____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 7:02am - arilliusbm ""] Anyone like to camp in the winter? Or are you guys pussies because you can't bring your house heating with you? know of any places that are good to camp in the winter? Granted, the best places to camp are in the true wilderness, but I'm looking for a campground. I know there's a few up near Conway NH which never close. I'm thinking about checking some out with the gal this winter. Any recommendations? Also, an excellent site: http://www.campmor.com |
______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 7:15am - the_reverend ""] I was going to say the green mountains and ask what gear you had until I realized you were a pussy. Winter camping = bring a shovel and go off trail 100 feet you pussy. |
______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 7:17am - Lamp ""] Burnside Park seems to be the real hot spot to camp in Providence right now and it looks to last into the winter. No fees to pitch your tent and close to lots of food. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 7:18am - arilliusbm ""] I've got enough gear, but need a liner for my sleeping bag. And LOL at going 100 feet off of trails, fuck that. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 7:20am - arilliusbm ""] The only problem is that my mummy bag is a little short for me. I need a long one, but the one I have now will suffice. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 7:52am - AndrewBastard ""] I'll tell you this much...IT SUCKS. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:00am - arilliusbm ""] How? Campfire + snow or cold air = awesome |
_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:14am - AndrewBastard ""] its just miserable...i know it seems kult or viking to want to do it but its not enjoyable. Sorry. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:19am - arilliusbm ""] Nah, I don't want to do it for that. I just want to hike in the winter or perhaps cross country ski. Wouldn't hurt to have a base or a place to crash. Just gotta be prepared. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:23am - AndrewBastard ""] hiking in the winter is cool but after a day of winter hiking, the sun goes down, believe me you'll want to be indoors. But go for it..its worth doing at least once. I did it at the base of Tuckermans to go snowboarding once and it was pretty brutal. Whiskey helped. |

____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:41am - arilliusbm ""] Lets do it. Just get a sleeping bag and liner |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:43am - Alx_Casket ""] No can do, I only sleep naked in 70 degrees with no sheets year-round. |
______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:44am - BSV ""] I need snow shoes, winter suit, sleeping bag, tent, socks and thermals. unless we have an amazing winter and I'm plowing tons, ain't gonna happen soon. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:47am - arilliusbm ""] Tent could be shared. I've got a 6 person tent. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:55am - Alx_Casket ""] Oh, well now I see where this is going. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 8:56am - arilliusbm ""] Get your mind out of the gutter, Mengsk. |
______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 9:03am - the_reverend ""] there are 4 season 6-person tents? I never knew. I've been in the woods hiking/camping in winter and I loved it. Carry your shit with you, bring tons of butter and don't plan to go more than 2-3 miles in 8 hrs. Once you break down, pack up, you can't go very far before you have to set up camp again. Especially if the snow is deep. |

______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 9:23am - BSV ""] wait til the ice comes, i know a small island on a lake that's close. we'll make an ice fishing trip out of it. |
______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 9:25am - the_reverend ""] I have all the gear for it, but no time. artic shell boots, shell gloves, crampons, -25 bag, 3+ season tent, etc... the only problem is that my snow shoes had their bindings chewed by a dog. I need to get that fixed. |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 9:25am - arilliusbm ""] Sounds sweet. Camp on the island, cook fish thats caught. |
______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 9:26am - BSV ""] yeah i've had my eye on some 400 gram hunting boots, those would be nice. |
__________________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 10:37am - bobnomaamrooney ""] If anyone's interested I'll be going on a hike of the Appalachian in NH and VT this December, wearing some jeans and a Graveland tshirt I borrowed from Kim Kelly. When it gets cold I've got a Temnozr long sleeve. You'll have to bring your own tent because I'll be making a lean-to out of branches and shit based solely on what I remember from scouts like 15 years ago. |

_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 10:59am - the_reverend ""] there are 3 hints I can give you for winter hiking/camping. 1) bring a bunch of sticks of butter, cook everything with a stick of butter in it. 2) the water from pasta makes the best hot chocolate especially with a stick of butter 3) wrap piece of pizza in tinfoil and put them in all your pockets. |
__________________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 11:05am - bobnomaamrooney ""] 1) Leave note on your car windshield telling passersby that you're a woman hiking alone. 2)Go for a brisk hike in Franconia Notch 3)Get stabbed to death by a Québécois trucker. |
_____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 11:15am - arilliusbm ""] LOL Then the trucker can use the butter as lube for his necrosex. |
________________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 11:19am - justinvaettir ""] winter camping is the fucking worst. hike, sweat, freeze. I'm from the white mountains and never understood what possessed the retards who'd end up on an air lift to dartmouth. |
________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 11:19am - sigh ""] Fuck that shit man! There is nothing manly about tenting in the winter. Don't be a dumbass. Rent a cabin somewhere, have a fire, get drunk. You'll enjoy it more. I've been out on the trails after the sun goes down with full winter gear on and you can still freeze. |
_____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 11:29am - arilliusbm ""] Dumbass? There are people that enjoy camping in the winter! |
________________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 11:37am - AndrewBastard ""] justinvaettir said:winter camping is the fucking worst. hike, sweat, freeze. I'm from the white mountains and never understood what possessed the retards who'd end up on an air lift to dartmouth. is it worse than sleeping on my floor with no blankets or pillow or anything? what a douche I am... I dont remember shit from that night...did we walk from the space to my house with me in a t shirt? i left my bag and hoody at the space. |
_______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 12:14pm - ark ""] Tuckerman's sounds like a sick trip..carrying a snowboard sucks in the wind but worth it. Just gotta have the right gear, snowshoes, avoid sweating if at all possible, and line your pockets with pizza and butter. That right there is a capitol idea rev. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 12:46pm - the_reverend ""] I went for 3 days in the green in either january or february. It was awesome, but on the way back we walked down one of the ski-hills and the girl in the party slipped and tore her LCL. |
________________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 12:49pm - AndrewBastard ""] one of the dudes I rode tucks with the second time I went fell almost immediately and basically ate shit the entire way to the bottom. |
__________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 1:24pm - Samantha ""] Sleeping in my freezing cold house with no electricity right now is kind of like camping. I recommend the Green Mountains for ultimate brutality. When I was in middle school, they used to make us go on a camping trip every year... in mid October... in Vermont. Try a couple of days of sleeping in a lean-to and climbing Mount Mansfield when it's cold enough to snow, and you're only 12 years old. I think they consider that child abuse nowadays. |
_______________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 1:34pm - AndrewBastard ""] the green mountains are so false compared to the white... NH or GTFO |
____________________________________ [Oct 31,2011 1:37pm - arilliusbm ""] Thats racist |
_______________________________ [Oct 31,2011 1:55pm - sigh ""] arilliusbm said:Dumbass? There are people that enjoy camping in the winter! I wasn't saying they're aren't any people out their that find it enjoyable. I enjoy being in the mountains too but spending the night in the woods of Maine or New Hampshire in the middle of winter is not my idea of enjoyment. It's extremely risky. That is usually a last resort when things have already gone wrong and survival has become the priority. It gets cold quick once that sun goes down especially if you've been sweating. Entirely doable yes, but you're choosing to put yourself into a potentially bad situation. |
