wuhan 14" china ($40)
Tama iron cobra double pedal($280)
Roc&Soc throne with backrest ($180)
drum heads-- evans G2 clear for toms,G1 coated for snare, aquarian superkick for bass drum
pile of broken cymbals, stands, heads and sticks (at least $1000 over the years)

my main bass is a Spector Euro 4 string in black and blue stain with stock EMG pickups and i installed an Aguilar OBP-1 active preamp in it. i finally got the bitch to work right and it sounds absolutely incredible. i couldn't be happier.

my backup bass is a Schecter Stiletto Deluxe 4 string in black. it plays great, but shitty wood, so i'm looking to trade it in for probably a Schecter Stiletto Elite neck-thru. i'm really impressed with how good Schecter basses play and how they sound.

both basses are strung with D'addario XL roundwound strings, .055-.110 and tuned low C, F, A#, D#

i have 2 other basses, a Carlo Robelli 5 string and a Jackson JS-40 4 string, both of which suck donkey balls and i'm either gonna sell them or destroy them.

Samson AG1 airline Wireless
Boss TU2 pedal tuner
SansAmp Bass Driver/DI (by far the most essential part of my sound)
SWR 550x amp head
SWR Goliath III 4x10 cabinet
Monster Cables
Dunlop Ultex picks 1.14mm

i can honestly say that i am completely happy with my gear. now that i have my Spector working, i am finally happy with my sound. if anything i'll add another SWR 4x10 cabinet, just because i can, but that's about it

I got the older, 80's gear:

Ibanez Roadstar II, 5 string with 4 string neck (impossible to find a bass like that these days... I've been looking)
Chomes flatwound strings... god, I love flatwounds now.
Peavey Megabass rackmount, 200w X 2@4 ohms, sickass chorus-- pretty badass
Ampeg 1x15 cab, don't even remember the designation
Boss Bass Overdrive ODB3 (absolutely badass pedal)
Hohner 4 string electric-acoustic bass

Not much gear, so I try to get as much out of it as possible.

Hey, any bass players out there have any recommendations for new active pickups? I'm getting really tired of my soapbars that I got on my bass. I'm thinking about humbucking EMGs, but have no idea which ones.

go with either EMG, or Bartolini pickups. i think you'll be happy with either one. i have EMG P&J set up in my Spector and the thing sounds awesome. and it has an extremely high output too. i would suggest Seymour Duncan Basslines as well but they're passive

well P&J means Precision and Jazz. i have a split-coil (Precision) and single-coil (Jazz) pickup in my Spector, hence P&J pickups. but u said u had soapbar pickups. so you should look at the EMG extended series pickups instead.

hahaha you must not understand compression. EQ compression and how they interact make up all the dynamics of a recording.

bottom line without a good compressor your recordings will suck, and they help alot live plus this is an 8 channel gate too with high and low pass filters

Compression for bass, unless 1) you have a lot of pedals & 2) expect to play out of a PA, is not completely necessary... as far as I know.

The pickups that are currently in my bass are active, and they seem as though they're the stock pickups. Shit, I wish I knew more about this bass.

no i rarely use a compressor on bass at all even when recording unless it is just to pull the sound forward a little but if you use a compressor properly with an EQ running to it on a side chain the you can cancel out overtones that cause low frequency distortion thus allowing you to play at a higher volume with less feed back and distortion

Hrm, maybe I should start using a compression pedal. I run the Boss Bass Overdrive pedal (ODB-3)
and, if I want a nasty dirty tone, I need to push the treble up... unfortunately I get tons of
feedback. The compression would solve that, no?

the compressor would help the feed back IF USED PROPERLY i havent tried using a feedback destroyer but they make those too BTW i would recomend rack gear for compressors not a pedal-unless the compression is built to a pedal but then i dont think it will have a side chain input which you need to cancel frequencies

ya i've heard that before but they just have such a nice sound, i prob would end up getting the a-series, i like zildjian more than paiste, just a personal preference tho although paiste are pretty fuckin sweet
by the way, can you do ultra fast drum kicks a la morbid angel, amon amarth, among many many others? i've gotten to be kinda fast but not anywhere near my goal, i was wondering if there was some kind of leg exercise (besides obviously just practicing and practicing) such as doing squats or something? if anybody knows any "secrets" fill me in

triggers help those proffessional guys out alot-- if you play heel up or heel down it might make a difference-- some of these guys can do double kicks almost like a double stroke - which is done through a slide technique step down toe then slide toe back and the slide on the way up should be your second kick=4 kicks in the time of 2 wich is hard -- best excercise i am aware of is the Dave Lomabardo methos which is basically to do dbl bass while leaning all the way back to stretch your stomach muscles to add resistance do this as long as you can stand-ankle weights 5 lbs help and when practicing always make sure you are steady if you go too fast and you hear the flow break then slow down and control it ---- speed = nothing without control
