i have been into this stuff since i yanked it from my parents vinyl back in six grade. it has really been the standard by which i measure most music.
everyone knows john mclaughlin is a monster but billy cobham is perhaps one of the greatest drummers of all time (sans steve gadd). jan hammer is unreal too, and not just because he did the miami vice soundtrack.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Captain Beyond yet. They always seem to get overlooked, but their self-titled album is one of my favorite pieces of 70s prog rock. Brilliant songwriting.
