Random 70s prog binge thread (starting with newly-found Mahavishnu Orchestra mega-preesh)

Sooo... I've recently decided that I'm woefully ignorant of 70s prog/art rock shit, and have taken steps to rectify that situation. I'm already experienced in the ways of King Crimson, and I'm strong in the Floyd, but I'm finding a whole slew of other shit I apparently fucking love.

Starting with this shit:

bennyhillifier

Mahavishnu is a name I've heard again and again for like since forever, but I think so many terrible jazzcore/superwackycrazyrandom/aren't-we-just-too-fucking-cerebral bands name-dropping them had poisoned me against them. This is the first thing I heard from them, and it blew me away. Ironically, when I swung by my folks' place to check out my dad's vinyl yesterday, this (and a Moody Blues record) were the ONLY prog-related stuff he had. (He was a Floyd guy, but he had all that shit recorded on reel-to-reel. Weirdo.) Anyway, this is like everything I like about jazz without all the crap that's prevented me from getting into jazz. Rock.

Another band I have no excuse for not getting into:

bennyhillifier

My boy Bill (same dude who got me into Megadeth circa age 8) has been telling me about real, actual Genesis (as opposed to Phil Collins Is A Douche Genesis) since about forever, and I always sorta nodded my head and never bothered to listen to it. Fuck.

Anyway, cue Aril breaking his self-imposed ban to call me a n00b. LOL :nuke:

I didn't care enough to look it up. I like jazz drumming and I thought to point that out. I'm not really a fan of 70s prog rock anyhow.

Yep, i dunno if YOU know... but there's a band called the "Mahavishnu PROJECT" that plays all there music, and is actually authorized by John McLaughlin (guitar/writer from mahavishnu) to do it because they don't tour anymore. I saw em at Jhonney d's in boston about 3 years ago, they still play, and they fucking nail it. Seeing that music performed live UP CLOSE is incredible. Look em up.

So true. I love rediculous raw jazz trios and quartets, and female jazz singers, but there's a point where too many elements spoils it. Big band is alright too especially when Buddy Rich or Gene Krupa are involved. That, Mahavishnu and some other far-out prog stuff (aside from the standard Yes, Floyd, Diamond etc.) is about all I can stand. And of course I listened to way too much Rush before I realized metal existed.

yeah, there's a lot of bullshit that's not quite good out there. But there is some very very very wierd stuff that SOUNDS like what you're describing, but is ACTUALLY good. Like:

some, but not all John Zorn material. A couple good things he played on that fit that description would be:
Prelapse (self-titled)
Xu-Feng
lot's of Naked City Cds

I prefer early 70s-mid 70s prog to late 70s, early 80s stuff like Rush. Rush's first album was complete Zeppelin worship. And then Neil came a long and him and his moustache changed history.
But you have you acid rock/prog, fusion prog, technical prog, moog prog, prog with blues in it, prog with spicy shrimp in it, fried shrimp prog, shrimp kebob prog, prog with shrimp gumbo prog, shrimp potatoe pie prog, prog with shrimp buiscuits, etc.
Here is a quote from a thread last year, because DYA likes to repost.

Check that blog out. Probably one of the best music blogs on the net.

They've got some REAL underground shit from the 70s. It's hard to find some of the shit on the net and the record itself; let alone anywhere else.

Just about everythin on that site is very unique and from all over the world. My favorite Indonesian prog band is called "Giant Step". Also check out the band "Camel" (although you can buy this stuff as it's more available than most) and a bunch of other stuff which is available on that site.

I'm assuming you know Camel. But that site is perhaps the best music blog on the net. It has stuff that is soooo fucking rare; avantgarde euro prog, etc. Check it out, you'll become addicted.
You will also realize that the musicianship and creativity in the 70s far exceeds that of today.

All hail 70s music or gtfo.

you probably live far away from cape cod.... Eloy is the bees knees... i certainly already know the guitar parts to child migration and the sun song among other riffs here and there... i didn't think anyone else was into those kraut fucksticks.

also for the suggestion box.....

Grobschnitt
Birth Control
Barclay James Harvest
Nektar
Atomic Rooster
Can
Mike Oldfield
Ash Ra Tempel
Novalis
Strawbs
OMEGA!

yeah im like an hour to 2 hours or so away from the cape depending on what part you are from. the bass in Eloy's tunes is delicious.

every mahavishnu orch. album rules. birds of fire is excellent, get inner mounting flame or visions....
i have been into this stuff since i yanked it from my parents vinyl back in six grade. it has really been the standard by which i measure most music.
everyone knows john mclaughlin is a monster but billy cobham is perhaps one of the greatest drummers of all time (sans steve gadd). jan hammer is unreal too, and not just because he did the miami vice soundtrack.

also check:

-return to forever: (chick correa/dimeola/s.clark)
-soft machine (holdsworth/holland)
& OBV. King Crimson

if you wanna really shit, check out miles davis fusion era: a-la, dark magus, live evil, on the corner etc. more like fusion / early jungle / afro beat.
think fela kuti on a speedball.

read into the story about mahavishnu orchestra / sri chinmoy etc..as there is some cool context surrounding the band.
