Borderlands 2[views:16626][posts:65]______________________________ [Sep 20,2012 9:30am - ark ""] arrow, clearly you know you're right, i can pull out my old PC Accelerator mags from the 90's that spell doom for PCs just like you do. they didn't pioneer digital distribution and small developer services that consoles took a queue from. look, i love my PS3 and there's room in my house for both. consoles come and go but so long as there has been PCs there have been games on them, pushing the capabilities of hardware, and now that macs are essentially the same platform, you're saying as more people have access to cheaper computers, there will be less games on them? that's just fuckin batty. without spending more time than i care to on this tired argument, here's a link to an article that's at least relevant to this thread: http://kotaku.com/5944645/borderlands-2s-k...on-feels-like-a-taste-of-the-future |

Regarding your two above comments: 1) More people with access to cheap computers? No. People are abandoning desktops entirely, and laptops are losing steam to the tablet market. As that happens, there's LESS hardcore gamers, not more. Pretty common sense - and the industry's sales figures support it. 2) But you do spend the time, don't you? Just like a year ago I did. And Aril. And MSD. Every year that goes by, there's less of us fighting the fight. But hey, I'm not going to prove anything to you my man - let's just talk about B2 and I'll bring this topic back up in a year. |
____________________________________ [Sep 20,2012 9:50am - Arrow NLI ""] Also - you seem to have taken my "people still play PC" joke as an attack on the superiority of PC gaming. I had a $1400+ gaming rig. I had a shelf with around $500 in games on it. I had a $200 (at the time) gaming mouse. I took PC gaming pretty darn seriously, and STILL think it's the greater platform. I'm not attacking the PC. I'm attacking the industry that feels the need to release crippled games or straight up console ports rather than invest into a platform that will see less sales, more piracy, and a more demanding user base. |
____________________________________ [Sep 20,2012 9:51am - Arrow NLI ""] Actually doing the math real quick, it was likely a lot more than $500 worth of games, sadly. I tossed a good 20-30 titles last week. (although quite a few are still in my Steam account if I ever chose to fire it up again) |
______________________________ [Sep 20,2012 9:59am - ark ""] i just fail to see it. there are crippled ports sometimes, and usually they're games i don't care to play. there's point and counterpoint. valve and GOG.com are making a KILLING and have been for years. valve is shooting for linux now. ubisoft just dropped their DRM almost entirely. skyrim was the fastest selling pc game of all time. i just contend it's not diminishing, the whole market is growing. i'm just saying i will still be playing games on a PC in 30 years because it's not going anywhere. consoles can be more profitable for larger developers, but they are gated communities that have huge barriers of entry for the indie guys that are cranking out games with superior gameplay these days. in other words, open platforms attract markets. anyway, you had a shelf of pc games? between downloads, piracy, and digital libraries, my shelf disappeared a few years ago. and goddammit, i did spend the time to argue. THANKS COFFEE |
_____________________________________ [Sep 20,2012 10:07am - Arrow NLI ""] Yup - even with steam games I always bought the box. I thought all the boxes looked pretty on a shelf together. A big issue with PC games, moreso than console, is the size of the user base. Hundreds, millions, whatever, it's a fickle crowd that seem to move from game to game en masse. So while the top 5 titles will always have people playing them, the smaller under-the-radar games tend to have a group that play them, then ditch when they find something else. It got annoying because I tend to buy games a little after they've come out. Countless times trying to get a match together in Demigod, or Supreme Commander, or Supreme Commander 2, etc... - I don't tend to play the more popular RTS games. Although at their peak, SC1 + 2 were some of the coolest player-bases in all of gaming. And the port thing is what finally drove me over the edge. Borderlands, (thanks for reminding me with that article) was just one of many games I held out to buy on PC only to watch all my friends on consoles end up with a smoother and better experience. Hey - I'm not going to be all doom and gloom - once in a while a game comes out that makes it worth your while to get the PC version. Off the top of my head, I'd mention Dragon's Age Origins, where the PC only overhead zoom mode completely transforms the game. Or Skyrim, where the mod community brings the game to the next level and even inspire the developers. |
_______________________________ [Sep 20,2012 10:24am - ark ""] there ya go. i'm hearing sense now. dragon age is a good example. my pc library is just full of games i've never even touched. i'm a huge FIFA guy and it's coming out next week, i decided to go for the PC version again, because it's $40 vs $60 for PS3, i can play at a higher resolution from my couch, or on my laptop anywhere, and i won't have 11 year olds yelling "HALA MADRID" through the mic. that's a big plus. |
_____________________________________ [Sep 20,2012 10:26am - Arrow NLI ""] If you want to be yelled at, go play Left4dead on steam so 11 year olds can call you nigger. |

If you're into action, FPS, etc... - the PC has already abandoned us. this i disagree with. really? Because the #1 FPS shooter franchise on the PC started dumbing down the PC ports of their games 3 or 4 titles ago. The #2 (I believe) franchise is now offering deals with PS3, and offering exclusive console content. And returning again to Crysis - #2 was dumbed down for console port (all 3 versions developed in tandem), despite #1 being one of the most graphically advanced games ever released on PC. |

I don't play FPS on console, with a couple exceptions (like Borderlands 2). I can't aim with a controller, I prefer a mouse. But I was never a big enough fan of FPS to keep a gaming rig going just to play a few games a month. So instead I just don't play them anymore. |
