Wow, you like Always? Isn't that with the dude singer? I really only like there stuff from Mandylion on. Surprisingly enough, The Gathering is probably the only band besides Tool that's been in my playlist consistently for over a decade.

Popularized? If you're talking about Europe, then sure; but they sure as shit ain't poopular here. I saw em two or so years ago at the middle east and it wasn't even close to sold out... yet they fill stadiums in Europe.... and "Evanescence" and "Lacuna Coil" get big here.. OBVIOUS rip-offs of the Gathering. "How to Measure a Planet" is one of the best ambient-folk-rock records ever.

Yeah, Jim, you're misinterpreting my use of that word, as it applies to them. What I mean by popularized relates to their evolution in style and the material that they became revered for, amongst their fans. I don't think in terms of mainstream popularity when it comes to a band like this. The Gathering are known to people who purchase albums from say, Century Media, Nuclear Blast, and the like.

Mike-
No i didn't misunderstand, i just like pointing out that in Europe they get the respect they deserve, and here they get a half empty mid-east.

Fans are usually irrelevant. They either stand there looking bored or they act like knuckle-dragging morons. As far as music is concerned, America has its share of great bands, but overall, Europe schools us.

I kind of disagree. I think on a general scale the fans in europe are more dedicated to metal and mroe into it. Irrelevant that may seem to some; but let's take a hypothetical situation:
if you're a beer snob talking to what you'd think was another beer snob, and then start talking about stuff like the difference between double bocks and abbey tripel ales and the other person acts like they know what you're talking about, then they're not a beer snob.
every european metalhead i've talked to was well educated in metal, liked both classics and new stuff, and were all around easier to talk to. in other words, they knew their shit. they seem to appreciate metal moreso than americans.

but then again, that doesn't really matter. I guess you're right. it's not about fans or other people.

[Sep 29,2009 11:55am - mikeofdecrepitude ""]
Well, when I say they're irrelevant, I'm speaking more in terms of my experiences at shows. Crowd reactions can enhance or ruin a particular show. When I watch live videos shot in Europe, the fans seem to barely even nod their heads; they look rather disinterested. I'm sure it's not like that everywhere, but whatever.

[Sep 29,2009 11:59am - aril  ""]
i know what you mean. that's why I can't stand going to the palladium anymore, regardless of what show is there (i'll make a few exceptions). but the crowd there EVERYTIME kills it for me. it's hard for me to even get into the band playing due to the brainless drones that attend those shows. smaller, more intimate venues are key, and less 13 year olds is key as well.

it's almost as bad as when you go to a non-metal concert and there's some fat couple dancing in front of you acting like no one is behind them. GET OUT OF THE WAY YOU'RE RUINING THE SHOW

bah, that's why you and i have an advantage. our line of sight is above them all. i don't pay attention to anyone at shows, except for those weirdos that dance completely devoid of rhythm, and inch ever closer to you no matter how much space is in front of them.

I really like it. It seems like a natural progression from The Red Album.

If you're expecting it to be heavier, like "First" and "Second", you might be disappointed, because it's not. It is however, very well written, densely layerd, SUPER fuzz'd out, and much more "rock" sounding than their previous material.

Don't get me wrong, it is heavy, but in a different way (whatever that means).

It has really really BIG riffs, the vocals are more raw, as is the overall production. You can really hear the recording space in the mix, big roomy drums.... much less polished than the Red Album, so in that respect, it's more like the earlier material.

There's even an acoustic song with clean vocals, which threw me off a little at first, but in context with the rest of the album, it's a great song.

Lot of talent with these guys. Even when they throw curve-balls stylistically, it's cool, and they make it work, unlike some bands who fall flat on their face when they attempt a shift in their sound.

I highly recommend checking it out. I just wish Relapse was releasing it on vinyl.
