With Doom 3, the HDR lighting was bleeding edge, but the game lacked the excitement of the original Doom. Quake 4 was also visually amazing but got real slow in parts... After my first few hours of play, I fought a whopping selection of original, unique monsters. A zombie. A skeleton. A goblin. A wolf. A bandit.... 1st edition D&D had more creativity in the 70s. Yay, so you can join the Dark Brotherhood and kill people in their sleep. You could do that in Ultima games on the APPLE II (not even the NES stuff that came later, the original APPLE II titles). I'm not saying the game sucks, it has a lot to it, and obviously care was put into the game design. But it is so overrated that I want to throw up. To quote my broken record self, it's a MMORPG, only you play it alone, and it's not that fun. |

You get taken away into this huge mystical world and you can essentially do any and everything you want...your character gets stronger and you gain respect, enemies etc... So some of the monsters/bad guys are cliche... like those first person shooters aren't all the same? I'm a fantasy geek, and I love this style game. I grew up on a Mac paying Ultima, Realmz, Exile Warcraft, Diablo, Myth etc etc...and playing D&D; a game like Oblivion take concepts from all those games, builds off of it and makes it with insane graphics and game play... I'm just a sucker for this type of shit... Overrated? Sure but so are the Grand Theft Auto games. I'd rather be a viking warrior with a sowrd and shield than a nigger riding a bike in compton with a tech 9. |

And for a few hours in this game, I loved wandering around or teleporting around on my map to check out the towns, etc. But my issue with Oblivion is, despite the 'sandbox' nature of the game, (and it is easily the most detailed 16 square miles of game world available anywhere) none of this open-endedness is any fun for me. The characters suck, there aren't any real innovations in the story and certainly not the characters (any random batch of NPCs I whip up for D&D has more personality than these), the combat is an improvement over Morrowind but still fairly weak when compared to 95% of other videogames. I dunno, just didn't appeal to me all that much. The ONE time in the game I was thrown for a loop was when I went to do my first Fighters Guild task, yes folks, clearing rats out of a basement. The twist was that I went down to the cellar, killed the rats, and it turns out the lady didn't want them killed. So that was the one time I was actually amused. |

Not to mention it had sick ass, totally fun, hours upon hours of multiplayer where you can basically assault the other Realms. So you pick either Albion (England), Hibernia (Ireland), and Midgard (Norway, yeah guess which i picked)...and you can go on these huge maps and lay siege to forts...oh man was that fun. I cannot wait for the Age of Hyboria Conan MMORPG. I am signing up for that in an instant. And I have to agree with GreatSpaldino. I've spent about $600 on my XBOX 360 so far, I've got three games (and I've played some of the others on my PC), and I just think it's sad that so far I've had the most fun playing Dead or Alive 4, which is basically just a prettier sequel. I am eagerly awaiting Dead Rising, Mass Effect, Gears of War and others to help see my investment through. Ironically, I also just got the PSP recently and I've been having a blast with it... |
