Satanic imagery can most definitely be cool to look at. When it comes to bands though, doing something to look cool or be seen as cool is not something I respect. My personal opinions about the nature of existance aside, I feel like a band that has lyrics about satanism and believes in the philosophy has much more artistic integrity than a band that sings about satanic themes to be edgy or cool. The only exception I can think of is if the band is using satanic themes satirically. |

The only exception I can think of is if the band is using satanic themes satirically. How about a better example? Lars von Trier is not a Satanist nor is he a Christian, but I wouldn't write off the merits or integrity of Antichrist because of that. Roman Polanski is not a Satanist nor is he a Christian, yet Rosemary's Baby still holds up. I guess "looks cool" was oversimplifying it but you can definitely explore those themes with plenty of integrity even if you don't personally subscribe to those beliefs. |

And I respect your opinion so I'm not just gonna talk out of my ass. You can speak intelligently on a topic without believing in it obviously. The way this topic got brought up is how bands that use occult/satanic themes use them to seem dark, evil and edgy. Is the position you've taken indicative of you supporting this behavior from musicians? I find it hard to believe you do. Maybe as a musician, I take the medium too seriously. |
_____________________________________ [Aug 16,2012 10:52am - arilliusbm ""] Themes in literature and movies are not the same when metal bands profess their love for Satan and don't follow through, IMO. If that is the case, Dante would be the ultimate Satanist. Different outputs, different audiences, different eras, different everything. No one is stating bands can't do it. It's just silly. All valid points, but not comparable. |

Is the position you've taken indicative of you supporting this behavior from musicians? I find it hard to believe you do. Maybe as a musician, I take the medium too seriously. Yeah, I'm no musician, so there's absolutely a disconnect. (You should definitely watch Rosemary's Baby, though, it's awesome.) Was going to use Alice Cooper as an example but he's a bad one since his lyrical content is less "hail Satan!" and more "beware of Satan, he's a total jagoff" To some people, myself included, Satanism in metal is a lot like hedonism in glam rock. It's part of the show and part of the aesthetic and a big part of the performance ~experience~ but we all know that the musicians still go home to their relatively normal lives and probably aren't sacrificing goats in the backyard or having gigantic pansexual glitter orgies every night. I definitely think that actual practicing pagans or Satanists will have more depth to add to the conversation and should be considered and heard when others are using their symbolism. Outsiders co-opting symbolism and rituals from other faiths and cultures is cultural appropriation, after all... |
_______________________________ [Aug 16,2012 11:46am - ark ""] beliefs warp with perspective. to believe is not to know. using occult themes in art as a vehicle for people to explore, sense, challenge their perspective is absolutely valuable. one can "know" a tenet of beliefs without "believing" it to be truth. this can be extremely oversimplified and bastardized by the artist who could portray such themes in a less than accurate or even a superficial light and so many are guilty of it. but i think that a proper exploration of themes can be made by an artist, without inferring anything about the artist's true beliefs. |
_______________________________ [Aug 16,2012 11:51am - ark ""] and remember that the earliest bands using satanic imagery were not doing it to be "satanic" but anti-christian and anti-dogmatic. purely as a provocation to social norms. these weren't satanists. |

_________________________________________ [Aug 16,2012 12:55pm - DestroyYouAlot ""] Oversimplification is oversimplified. Are we talking about Satan as a concept? An archetype? A literal fallen angel? A different entity (or entities) under the same name? Congealed psychic energy given shape? A philosophy? Or just a figurehead for simple opposition? Are any/all of these things mutually exclusive? And what serious occultist talks about them explicitly on a fucking message board without a healthy degree of misdirection? Besides, black-and-white literal thinking is for Abrahamic monotheists. If your concept of a thing is that limited, I don't know what to tell you. |
