I haven't been into video games for a few years so I'm not too familiar with either system; I'm looking to get one of them but I seek your assistance. What are the pros and cons of each that you've experienced?

Xbox360
Pro - Better of the two
Con - Could be better
PS3
Pro - Could be worse
Con - Worse of the two

PS3 has more pros as a media center especially since it plays BR.

But as far as games, it really depends on what kinds of games you prefer. Both should satisfy, but if you play 95% FPS then get a 360...

360, seeing how most all games are on both systems now.

unless of course you want a Blue ray player like previously said.

I am just glad that FF13 is on the xbox so I don't get tempted to join PS again

PS3 has superior graphics/processing power. (this is a fact, not opinion.) PS3 plays Blue Ray. Most of the games are on both now.

I own all 3 next gen consoles and honestly, I play my 360 more than any other system. But then again, I've owned it since it's pretty much came out, own more games for it, and most of my friends have xbox live. But if you're just getting a console now, I'd go for a ps3. While there are exclusive titles to both systems, the majority of games come out for both now( i.e. tekken 6 is out now for both, bioshock 1 and 2, etc). And if you have an HDTV, you can't go wrong with a blu ray.

I own a 360 and have never played PS3, so I can't compare, but I love the 360

....but as others said, a PS3 might be a better investment because of the Blu Ray

I would suggest Sega Master System.

PS3 plays PS1 games too... and that rules, cause you can play FF7.

Both are great, but I have a 360 as it was cheaper and had alot more games. Nowadays it doesn't matter too much as you are going to spend $300 on one or the other and they both have (for the most part) the same games. 360 is getting Alan Wake (Max Payne guys), so that's the main reason I would still go for the 360 if I was trying to decide.

Also, the PS3 does not look better. Watch some comparison videos and they either look the same or worse.

Get a ps3 dude, xbox 360 is loud, doesn't have a network adapter, to play online you gotta pay, ps3's is free

No matter how well they have done certain games, if you look at the processing specs the PS3 does have more power, and is capable of better graphics.

By the time PS3 lives up to its "potential"...Microsoft will have a new console!

Sure.

I found a cool chart, although it doesnt' include the newer cheaper PS3s, (it might not have the new xbox either) it compares some stuff.

Capable yes. This new game coming out for PS3 thats called Heavy Rain (same guys who did Indigo Prophecy) is a good example. Probably the best looking game I have seen this generation.

I mean, right now the two systems are a total wash (besides the blue ray thing, which makes up for the price difference) And most of the games are out for both. But if you're seriously trying to get the more powerful system that will be capable of more in the long run, get the PS3. If you don't care about that, and you just wanna play next gen games but don't want a BR player, get an Xbox. They're both awesome systems, and i bet you'd be happy with both.

Fuck it, I'm just going to get a Jaguar. Anyone remember that failure?

Anyway, thanks for the input gentlemen. I'm not too big into FPS games, don't give a shit about playing online, want a BluRay player and also enjoy a slew of PS1 games, so I'm thinking I'm going with PS3. Or maybe I'll just get both at tax time so I can waste even more of my time sitting on the couch losing brain cells.

New ps3's DO NOT play PS1/PS2 games. If you want backward compatibility, you're going to have to get an older model. Preferably the 60gb as that has the hardware for BC and isn't just a software emulation like the 40gb and 80gb.

This is true. I had a friend who has the PS3 with BC. They are really rare now. Someone offered him a grand and he still refused. This is why I still play my PS2 more often than any other console. I love PS1/PS2 games.

I've owned a 360 since 2005 and it gets a fair amount of use when a good game comes out, which is every few months. I'm a PC gamer at heart, but maintaining a gaming PC isn't for everybody. If you're getting into the console arena at this point, go for a PS3. It will end up having a much longer shelf life, they just came out with the slim version and Sony will keep pumping games out for years. Whether or not the hardware is superior is a complicated question because the hardware is entirely different from the Xbox, which is engineered to be more like a PC. The PS3 theoretically has more processing power - but it's harder for developers to tap into that power. Games will keep looking better for both systems as developers learn a console's secrets. Not that any comparison matters - it's entirely dependent on how well the game takes advantage of the hardware.

Markymark, get a PS3 and Metal Gear Solid IV (which I still haven't played...) and I think the PS3 has free online play but I'm not 100% sure.

the 20gb ps3s go for more than the new slims.

ummm.... my PS3 250gb does play PS1 games. I tried it already. I think it's different per model... but it does NOT play PS2 games. I guess the only model that did that was the 80gb.

Console fanboy wars are annoying but the most annoying argument of all is PC vs Console.

and it was the 60gb and the 20gb models that played ps2 games, jim. Just saying. All models play PS1 games.

Right, 60 not 80.... whatever.. My main point was that they DO play PS1 games.

martins said: the most annoying argument of all is PC vs Console.

please. This was a valid argument for years considering
a.) pc games were more advanced and had better graphics
b.) RTS and turn based games were superior on pc (and still are for that matter)
c.) when games had the 3dfx capability it smashed all console competition.

It wasn't really until n64 came out that consoles had the upperhand. PC gaming was superior for YEARS.
It's not a valid argument anymore because xbox and ps3 are essentially computers.

But the technology comes out for PCs first. People don't just play many PC games anymore because there's really no point. I'd gladly play PC games over ps3 and xbox anyday.
